I've been looking for a broken/incomplete military surplus rifle to fix up as practice for becoming a gunsmith. Anyone know where I can get on? I checked Allan's Armory and they have Carcano's, and Mauser's, but nothing that has ammo at the ready. Anyone know where I can find one, or want to sell one? I'm in Alabama, for an FFL problems

You can get a mosin for next to nothing. It will probably be complete but they can all use a nice new stock and refinishing.

The thing is that I would like to gain experience by fitting parts and finding parts to complete it piece by piece. I've found Mausers and Carcanos for cheaper than Mosins, but they need seemingly hard to find parts they need.

Plus ammo for the Carcano is difficult to find, but Mauser ammo is easy and everywhere

Have you been to a pawn & gun shop lately? I bet they will have an ugly gun for your training, maybe an SKS.

I went to a pawn shop earlier and they had the same old same old, alls that was different was that they were missing a few Mosins and SKS's

And to add that I'm not old enough to purchase a gun, so my dad would have to talk to them

If you get a Mauser action you could hone your skills by rebarreling it to an available caliber. Any large ring 1898 model action should have enough parts out there for you to find a bolt and serviceable 8mm barrel. May even be able to find some if the South American barrels in .30-06.

So a broken Mauser in an odd caliber should not be a deal breaker if you really want the gunsmithing experience.

A Mauser in .30-06 would be pretty cool, nice and plentiful ammo. Know where I could find a .30-06 Mauser barrel?
