What type of gun are we talking about here?

Theoretically, you could machine away part of the slide, and keep your standard barrel. Advised? No.

To replace a barrel on a standard pistol is easy enough to find a custom barrel maker that will provide you one with a longer than standard barrel that is threaded to receive a suppressor.

However, you need to know what suppressor you are getting before hand because some manufacturers use reverse threads to avoid "garage" modifications....

What can are you looking at getting? And what are you planning on putting it on?

Ah my friend and brother from another mother, you need to think OUTSIDE the box.

I give you, the AAC Black Box:

Notice the offset of the chambers, so that all the gases are vented down, reducing muzzle flip, to keep the weapon from climbing on the recoil of the round. The Black Box hasn't been officially released yet, but the theory is VERY sound and the final product is what will DEFINITELY be put on the front of one of my 1911's.
