For adding a suppressor, I am assuming the barrel is threaded on the outside. I make this assumption based on the fact that I have seen thread protectors that by design have to go on the outside.

So say I have a pistol, want to add one, do the paperwork dance, all is approved.

Do I need to find a barrel that extends past the end of the slide? How does that portion of the process work?

What type of gun are we talking about here?

Theoretically, you could machine away part of the slide, and keep your standard barrel. Advised? No.

To replace a barrel on a standard pistol is easy enough to find a custom barrel maker that will provide you one with a longer than standard barrel that is threaded to receive a suppressor.

However, you need to know what suppressor you are getting before hand because some manufacturers use reverse threads to avoid "garage" modifications....

What can are you looking at getting? And what are you planning on putting it on?

All of the following would be in accordance with Federal Laws and Regulations, of course.

Could one buy two identical pistols, with non-fixed barrels, one with a 4" barrel, and one with a 5", thread the 5", switch that barrel to the 4" pistol for supressor use, then switchit back to the 5" when done?

a) is that legal?

b) would firing the now threaded 5" barrel in the 5"gun without the supressor damage the threads, since the barrel is not fixed?

Don't really have a project in mind just yet, a supressed 1911 would be sweet, though sighting, I imagine is out the window with a can on the end.

Ah my friend and brother from another mother, you need to think OUTSIDE the box.

I give you, the AAC Black Box:

Notice the offset of the chambers, so that all the gases are vented down, reducing muzzle flip, to keep the weapon from climbing on the recoil of the round. The Black Box hasn't been officially released yet, but the theory is VERY sound and the final product is what will DEFINITELY be put on the front of one of my 1911's.

Oh my, yes. A quality supresseor goes for about $600, sound about right?

Price depends on a few things. I have a buddy that makes them. But, it takes way to long to make them and his price is to high for me.

I am looking at one from libertycans.com they are mainly 22 cal suppressors. The model I am looking at runs $260 +$200 tax stamp. That is what I want it for but having one on my 45acp with my loads would make it nice and quite.
