I'm throwing around the idea of buying a new colt in a few months but I'm not sure which model to go with, looking for suggestions on what you guys would do.

I want something with modern sights (like the Novaks), and a skeletonized hammer and trigger. Nothing over the top, just modernized. I'm also about 90% sure that I want stainless and fairly certain that I want the full size 'government' style, but both could change depending on model and price point I'd imagine.
Something to be proud of, good quality at an affordable price ($1200 or less). Reliability is a concern so I don't need a match gun and also probably couldn't afford one anyway.:p

I'm thinking that the gun will be more or less a safe queen and the occasional shooter, but it may end up being an SD or HD gun at some point... So, what do y'all suggest?

here's a few suggestions for you. the prices are MSRP, so pricing might be different locally.

see if any of these might suit your wants and needs. even at MSRP, they fall within your budget. hope this helps.

Sure does!

I had no idea that the Gold Cup was priced that closely to the other models. I was thinking $1500+

Sputnik, I bought a Colt Gold Cup over 40 years ago. Depending on my needs over the years, it like me went thru many changes. The old gun has been an IPSC gun a Bulls eye shooter finished off a few elk and moose. It has been a personal protection gun and a pleasure to own. We are still good friends after all these years.:)

Colt website has the 2013 colored catalog for download. They also have price list for download. It was updated yesterday. I am trying to get an AR shipped over here.

www.1911forum.com has been a great resource for me. After looking for a bit, I decided on buying an older Colt 1911 but there were many suggestions for the new series 70 (it would need a few upgrades in your case). I'd take a look at the series 70, shoot it a bit and then have it upgraded. If you don't want to do any upgrades, the XSE fits the bill.

Frequently there are a few Gold Cups on gunbroker.com as well:

I own a SS Gold Cup Trophy and, personally, couldn't be happier with it. First time I shot it I hit dead center over & over...felt like I'd been shooting it all my life. Only downside is that it is, of course, full size so it definitely doesn't replace my Ruger SR9c as a CCW...but that doesn't even remotely damper the joy I get shooting my GCT
