So I finally broke down and bought my first firearm. Picked up a Walther P22 - I wanted a semi-auto that I could spend time at the range with without breaking the bank on ammo. I'm a Florida resident and I've also signed up to take a Firearms safety course with live fire exercise in order to obtain my CCW (although I don't plan on carrying the P22 or anything anytime soon - I want to become far more proficient first).

What else would you guys recommend a newbie do? Obviously practice, practice, practice. I'm looking for things you wish you would have known years ago when you first started shooting, etc. What about books? I've already read Ayoob's In The Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection and thought it was fantastic. My next trip to B&N will most likely have me picking up a few more of his books, and one or two by Col. Jeff Cooper. Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance guys.

I would recommend printing out this target, buying some Shoot-n-SEE stick on targets in a small enough size to JUST cover the center of the target, but keep the instructions visable.

Then I would take a bunch of them to the range as often as you can, shoot as often as you can afford. Nothing is going to beat rounds down range.

Practice, Practice, Practice is going to make you better.

    You anywhere near Ft. Lauderdale?

I'd be glad to accompany you to the range for some knowledge transfer.

Yep. Living in Davie, and that would be greatly appreciated as I'm an extreme newbie. What range(s) would you recommend? I was thinking about spending time at Weston Arms for indoor shooting and up at Markham Park for outdoor.

Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry by Ayoob is pretty good. (Not sure of the title, but that's pretty close). JD, how does a Luddite like me go about printing that target into something usable. If I PM you would you mail me one I could xerox? I'll include SASE.

If you have a copy of Microsoft Office's Word, it would be simple to insert the image into a document and then stretch it appropriately for printing. After that, you could just Xerox any copies afterward from that original. If you have Word, let me know and I can give you more detailed instructions, or simply email you a Word document set up accordingly. As far as making it larger than what would be possible on an 8.5x11 sheet of printer paper (which would be quite more useful I'd imagine) you might be able to take a copy of the image to Staples/Kinkos have them print you out a large version for a fairly low cost. ... Now that I think about it, I could also cut that image into 4 quadrants and print each on a separate 8.5x11 then tape 'em together for a larger target.

Thank you Krahis, if I knew anything about this I'd take you up on it. Maybe I can get the Lovely Miss Freefall who is not such a luddite to do this for me. It's all I can do to correspond on this forum.:(

Many thanks JD. As soon as I figure out how to pm. By the way, how do I quit getting e-mails about somebody posting to something I did? What a lot of crap in the junk box.

Markham is great for long guns but I don't like it for handguns.

I haven't shot Weston yet, it's too new for this old fart! I usually shoot Arizona on 441 N of Oakland Park or Revere in Pompano.

I'll PM you so we can do some shooting. I might even try Weston seeing how it's in your back yard.

Cane, I'm almost as old as you, I just take things literally. What can I say, I'm a Luddite.

Hey, we welcome Luddites here too. (You're a British textile artisan?) And I think that makes you ~130 years older than me. [IMG]

Hang in there old man and us kids will bring you along.

    Don't hate me because I'm ignorant! I try. ;)

    1. Click "User CP" in the upper left area of this window
    2. Click "Edit Options" in the menu bar on the left.
    3. In the "Default Thread Subscription Mode" box (4th box from the top in the middle) change the drop-down box from "Instant Email Notification" to "No Email Notification"
    4. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click the button labeled "Save changes."
