This may sound like a stupid question, but if I get a .22 AR could I swap the uppers to a 5.56/.223 from the .22lr and would they work?

I think it depends on the manufacturer.

There are certainly .22 LR conversion uppers that work on standard AR lower receivers... there are even .22LR bolt/mag conversions that work in standard AR rifles...

I believe the key would hinge on the trigger/hammer mechanism in the lower of the dedicate .22 LR rifle you purchase as to whether or not that trigger group would work with a .223/5.56 bolt carrier group.

It would have to have a magwell big enough for 556 mags as well. Best thing to do is to buy an AR and then buy the 150 dollar 22 conversion bolt with mag. All the fun of the 22 but can also take care of business with a quick bolt swap.
