First off Hi I'm new to the forum and would be very gratefull for any help you can give me. On monday my house was broken into and among other things they stole my rifle. Most of my guns are stored at my dads farm and the one other gun that is here they did not find. I have given the police the sn and description of the gun. This morning I went to every pawn shop in town and to several of the gun shops that buy used guns and gave them the same. Do yall have any other tips on recovering this gun? Its a ruger #1 so it is a rather pricey gun but the sintamentle valvue is even greater. My grandfather gave me this gun and he is now near his death bed. Any help would be great. I dont know if this is the right place to post this so please move it if needed. Again thanks for any help.

So far you've done the right things by checking the pawn shops. When you have time, do it again and then go a bit further each day and do more shops. Most thieves will try to get rid of the stuff within a few days.

Keep an eye on Texas Gun Trader, you don't have to sign up for an account unless you want to buy/sell/or contact someone, and check your local papers in the sporting goods section. You might also want to check bulletin boards at local sporting/hunting/fishing goods stores.

    Good luck.

Also if you'd like to hang around with us, go over to the intro section and let us know a bit about you. Lot of good people here with a lot of knowledge.

Keep a eye on craigslist guns are posted on there every few hours but get flagged rather fast so you have to keep a good look out.

If you know the serial number you can contact the police and let them know that serial number has been stolen as well as local pawn shops/gun shops.

Spit- I will pass up the obvious shot about reading skills in NC- the OP has done that.

To the Original Poster- sounds like you have done the things that would be doable. If they catch him, hope they hang him.

If the gun turns up in Tx. you got a good chance of getting it back, but if it turns up in N.J., N.Y., D.C. Chitcago, or Ca. don't get your hopes up.

If you provided the serial number, the Police will enter the gun into a database called NCIC. Guns remain in the system forever. I have recovered guns stolen as many as 37 years earlier.

Pawn shops in Texas are forbidden from putting pawned items out for display/sale for 90 days. Many pawn brokers are not very forthcoming with civilians.

I checked, but did not find any Ruger #1's pawned in either Lubbock or Amarillo in the last week.

I called the police department back today and my case hasnt even been put in the system yet. I figured if there was a stolen gun it would kind of be high on the list.

As for the pawn shops most were very helpful and at least acted like they would help. Tho a few did just take the flyer I made and threw it on a back desk then walked away.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

Also the people I suspect of the robbing are just small time gang bangers so I dont think that the stuff will get to far.

Don't feel bad I can't read worth a hoot before my first cup o' joe in the A.M. either. ;)

That stinks that your grand dad's rifle was stolen. My dad had his dad's Colt 1911 stolen out of his van that my grand dad been issued when he was commissioned as a Captain in the Texas National Guard (he had been a Texax Ranger).

If your rifle's serial number hasn't been entered into N.C.I.C after a week you need to be raising cain with the chief. We enter stolen guns ASAP. All legitimate pawn shops have to report all of their transactions to police if not daily, in a "reasonable" time.

well, one of two things happens when someone steals a gun...they sell it as fast as they can and get $ for w.e.

OR they keep it and use it to shoot up the hood.

Best of luck at the pawn shops...hope you get your rifle back.

That is true and also why I have any hope at getting it back. Since its a drop breach single shot rifle its kinda slow to shoot if you are not properly trained. I really doubt that these thugs are trained so they are just gonna get rid of it. If it was my pistol or my sks Im sure that they would keep it and use it.

Don't forget outdoorstrader.com (state specific search) and gunsamerica.com They are both handy for non-FFl's to move guns. gunbroker.com's not a bad place to look either. Good luck

I had a pistol stolen from a house I was "house sitting" for my Sister's Friend in the 1980's.
Did all the routine stuff, same stuff you've done.
8 months later.... I got a letter saying I could come and claim my pistol at the Police Station in the jurisdiction.
The caught the burglars, but it took a long time for the wheels of justice to grind them up.
Point being.... it might take some time to recover it.
About the time you give up, well miracles never cease.

    Good news!!!

I finally have some good news. Right as I got off work today my bank called and told me someone tryed to pass one of my stolen checks at another bank. I hauled butt across town to the bank and gave them my report # and phone #. They sent out an alert to all of there other branches. Before I even got home (maybe 20min) I get a call from the manager of a different branch. They tried to pass another check and that they were being arrested as we spoke. A few minutes later I get a call from the police and they told me they got 2 of the 3 guys who were passing the check. I think as long as they have not already unloaded all of my stuff I will hopefully get it back.:D

    Bigbomar,

I assume you live in Lubbock! Be sure and check with the local PD who took your report and assure they have a pawn division. Just so you know most agencies have a pawn division who monitor all pawned material and get a monthly report from the pawn shop. In most states it is the law. You are doing the correct things. I would also keep an eye on the local paper classifieds if they have gun sales as well as anything listed on Gun Broker and other online sources for gun sales by entry date!
Good luck my brother and the only good gun thief is a dead one!:)

At this point If I get in the same room as them when I leave I will be charged with murder. so that might not be a good idea. But at the same time I realy do hope that they resisted arrest and that the pd had to at the very least taze them.:D:D
