What is best to use to strip a stock
Formby's Furniture Refinisher. Not a paint stripper. Be careful- flammable as hell.
It could have a finish on it that is to tough for the Formby's Furniture Refinisher. But the safest thing is to try that first.
What would be best if that don't work
Well you COULD tell us what you have. Some finishes, like say the older Remington glass hard finish, needs something quite strong to cut it. Some finishes used shellac and rubbing alcohol removes them. So choices would be alcohol(for shellac finishes), strong paint remover(for newer super hard finishes), lacquer thinner(for lacquer finishes), hammer and chisel(for very hard to remove finishes), maybe other solvents for different finishes.
Well I'm going to do my sks but first I'm doing a Ruger model 96 first for the practice
The Formby's should work good on the Ruger. The sks might just take alcohol.
Another product that works wonders is " Old English Scratch Cover". Comes in light and dark. No refinish- it just makes your old finish look much better. I've used it many times on guns that I did not want to refinish.
For the finish on some of the Browning rifles.......
Lol nice Thnx for the help guys
