Well, bugger me! (figuratively speaking). My PTA arrived in the post today

(that's Permit to Acquire, for the must be very few here now who I haven't yet driven to distraction rabbitting on about our bureaucratic firearm-quagmire)

I waited a short 5 weeks for it, what's more (yes, hard to believe, but that is considered pretty short here, for a handgun).

NOW comes the fun part - deciding! (MP standard 9L or Pro, in my case). Ringing the importer! Hoping he can source a left-handed holster! Waiting for however long he takes to send it to the gun shop of your choice! Travel out to the far suburbs, heart in mouth, carrying lots of $$! Flash yer licence at them and commence filling out copious amounts (yes more including a new form = notice of purchase & registration this time) of paperwork! After - god has it really been more than a year? - take possession of said gun in your sweaty palm! Hurriedly buying a cleaning kit etc & trigger lock on the way out so you can legally transport it home, unmolested by the pursuing SWAT team! Wondering "holy sh*t I should have really studied those cleaning vids on youtube more closely" before now!

At least that's how I'm predicting it will probably go :p

Feel like time is conspiring against me though - the PTA last for 3 months until it expires and you must re-apply all over again, but that's not what's concerning me. Its the friggin election on Aug 21...the truly horrifying prospect of Green control of the federal Senate after that date (a very strong possibility).

A few things the prospective NSW Green Senator Lee Rhiannon, has said in the past:

My first task will be to look at a total handgun ban.

Law-abiding gun owners need their guns taken away from them.

We do not support recreational hunting by any method, by any person, including farmers.

Oh yeah, she thinks that banning farming would be a good idea into the bargain. Let the animals run wild n free and all that lol

What is especially chilling about her background is that her family were prominent Stalinists who supported Moscow through Russia's 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia and the killing of the striking Polish workers...which was way too an extreme position for the rest of the Australian Communist Party, and the movement then split. Bit of a worry that someone like that might get some REAL power in about a week. Be afraid...she is a total nutjob.

So I really hope i can get my gun and at least hold it before it gets snatched back, heh.

BUT>>All you can do is forge ahead and hope for the best though...I'm not going to let any possible future problems trash my happiness for today...f*ck them all, atm. I have to admit that when I got the letter inside and ripped it open, I was giggling like the proverbial schoolgirl. Woohoo! :D

Zhuk- you need to do some reading- about boating accidents, and how it always seems that your firearm was aboard the boat at the time of the horrid accident. DEEP water. As I recall, it was about 9:40 PM. Wednesday. Of next week.

Congrats on having made it thru the paper quagmire- and enjoy your gun. We also have politicians here that are proof that an animal CAN live with no brain.

I just picked up a very nice older Colt Officer's Model Target .38 Special last week from my local dealer. I also had to do a lot of paperwork- I took a copy of my Collector's FFL out of my wallet, signed it, and handed it to him with the cash. He handed me my Colt. :p

Thanks :) It's all I can do to stop myself ringing the importer at 9.01am tomorrow morning and saying "I haven't decided, dammit I'm going to get both!"

Going to have to have the choice down by next week...just in case. After so long waiting I can hardly believe its this close, finally. Its a real 'pinch yerself' moment :p

If any time has called for one of these, I think it's probably now heh [IMG]

Wouldn't that go down a treat chiseled on the front of Parliament House, lol. At this fag-end stage of the campaign I think there would be millions of takers for that job.

I understand about the ever-present and constant danger of these tragic boating accidents, c3. Sadly, I don't that would be considered a valid reason for your safe suddenly becoming rather emptier than usual when the police decide on one of their "keeping the population safe" snap inspections...

Bureaucracy just has no understanding of how easily boats capsize do they

    Congrats Z!

Maybe they won't actually take your gun; maybe they will just equip you with a satellite tracking device or something. ;)

Wouldn't an embedded chip be easier? They could fit us all with one on the way into the polling booths (hey another plus for compulsory voting lol)

Hmm, better not give the Greens any ideas

In any case, my patience will have to last a bit longer - the importer is going down to Melbourne for a month, so I get to do a bit more teeth-gnashing in the meantime (lucky the PTA lasts until Nov!). Also get to see how the election result will pan out...

    Thanks guys :)

Heh yeah getting a bit uh toey now...so near, yet so far. Weird, but after all this time the process suddenly feels so slow lol

Going to have to content myself with getting some accessories/hunting for somewhere which will sell me a holster & mag pouches (no mean feat since I can't import). Should keep me occupied in the meantime...and performing anti-Green incantations for the election Saturday (bet you're doing this too, Aus :p)

My vote's just going to go to the lesser of two evils I think... Only problem is, I can't figure out who's less evil!!!

    Yeah tell me about it.

Looking through all these OS sites where you can pick up holsters for 25 bucks...its kinda tormenting. And don't talk to me about ebay lol

As for the election - far be it for me to turn this thread into an anti-Green rant (well anymore than it already is, lol). Much as that is my natural inclination, but both Labor AND the Libs are preferencing them in my electorate, can you effin believe that?

Labor yeah you expect that...but the LNP too? WTF is up with that?

Liberals are only doing this in 3 electorates in the whole country - Sydney, Melbourne and Grayndler (wherever the hell that is). Giving it to the Greens just so Labor doesn't get them. Sydney is a safe Labor seat by 18%, Greens will come 2nd, hence the Libs don't even bother  So I don't bloody know now!

The only how-to-vote junk mail I've received so far is from the Communists...and he only got 67 votes last time from memory lol

At least we have the Shooters Party in the Senate.

    zhuk,
I can't imagine living under the laws yall do. I do believe we would see an armed revolution if those types of laws were ever passed here.

Which is why its useful to be armed to begin with :D And Texas has no problems in that regard, am I right? lol

For a whole lot of reasons this has has not ever been and cannot be so here, at least in any foreseeable future.

    Ireland, on the other hand...

That's true, I can't believe that the Coalition is preferencing them either! I haven't changed my address on the electoral roll yet so my vote will be going to our local independant who does a good job and wins pretty much unopposed every time, but in the Senate the Shooters Party will definitely be at the top of my list!

As for the Greens  I don't think there's a lot we can do about it; although they definitely won't have the majority of seats, they will have the swinging power if it turns out that Labor and the Libs have a similar amount... So for the next three years at least it looks like we'll have to put up with Abbott and whoever stabs Gillard in the back next constantly licking the arse of Bob Brown hoping for his backing! (Although he'll probably quite enjoy it, I'm sure the rest of us will pay:D:p)

Sorry for hijacking your thread lol, but I thought if I started one of my own it's only be you and I understanding it anyway! Congrats on your PTA, and good luck with the shopping!

Hey hijack away Aus...it seems to have become a defacto election rant anyway lol

What freaks me out personally (and I don't know if its just rampaging paranoia or not) is the prospect of Senate control going to the Greens' heads & they decided to blackmail whoever ends up in Govt...like saying "We won't pass your legislation or will block Supply unless you agree to implement some of our policies..." (and we can guess what a few of THOSE might be )

Might be paranoia, but Lee Rhiannon used to be the Convenor for the "National Coalition for Gun Control" ie those whackjobs who got in Howard's ear in '96, and scream up a storm about how evil the SSAA is and all the bloodthirsty rednecks it represents are every time some criminal goes mental with a firearm

And let's face it, this sort of thing has happened before when Supply got blocked after Whitlam & the Khemlani loans affair...I was only in primary school at the time but remember it as my parents were dyed-in-the-wool Liberal supporters...all Govt money was frozen, no public servants got paid, things kinda ground to a halt. So there's a precedent.

Would they be batsh1t-insane enough? They've never had power in their own right before, so only time will tell. And yes the 'Brown'-nosing (pun unintended lol) is going to be excruciating

Back on topic heh, think I've found somewhere in Burleigh Heads (of all places!) which sells holsters...possibly even LH. Fingers crossed...

    Drugs are bad, mmkay?

Don't think there's ever been an election campaign as entertaining as this one :p

    This is priceless!

    Pipe dreams

Knock Knock. ''Who is it?'' ''It's me, Dave, man. Open up, I got the stuff.'' ''Dave's not here.'' ''No man, I'm Dave man … etc.'' So runs the old Cheech and Chong routine of the 1970s but the joke is still running at Nimbin.

The Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP) Party again has failed to obtain registration as a political party.

According to Michael Balderstone, of the Hemp Embassy in the north coast town, party status was lost when Australian Electoral Commission representatives started phoning dopers to confirm their membership but many hung up thinking they were narcs. Registration was refused.

Hemp lodged a new application this year. The AEC started phoning stoners. Some hung up, paranoid. Another called Sunflower could not convince the AEC she was for real. The days kinda drifted by and then Gillard called the election and now the Hemp Party is nowhere.

Balderstone said Australian does not know what it missed: ''Imagine, instead of the current incredibly dull campaign, there were a bunch of excitable and photogenic 'polite force' officers carrying around a giant 42-foot inflatable scoobie!''

www.smh.com.au - One day to go

Too paranoid to confirm their registration...lol

You just have to love this :D

    zhuk,

I'm sure you have answered this time and again but just how long from start to finish does the average gun purchase take down there any way?

I really hate to see things the way they are for yall. I used to think Australia would be a fantastic place to retire to,(dreamed about it actually) to get away from the crowds we have here. But now it looks that I would only be coming down to get shot by the law or thrown in jail.
