I recently purchased my first .45 - a Springfield XDS. I like this gun a lot but would like a better range gun. I like what I read about Ruger's entry into the 1911 market with the SR1911. So it comes down to trying to decide if I want the venerable 1911 or something with a modern design like an XD45 or .45 ACP. I would like to be able to do some match shooting one day. Any suggestions on which way to go. Around here we don't have any place to rent and try out guns.

If your wish is to have a range gun and possibly move into competition you answers your own question. 1911 all the way.

Is the 1911 inherently more accurate than polymer frame guns, most of which don't have a 5-inch barrel. I would expect the 1911 to hold up better for sure.

Da! Now I get it. That is a major distinction - SA and a 5" barrel would a great combination. The most accurate gun I own (in my hand anyway) is my S&W model19 357 with 4" barrel. In single action it is awesome! Thanks for passing that on. I guess if I had ever shot a 1911 I would have known that. Now I just have to find one I can afford. 500-600 buys a good polymer gun, but this is barged basement for 1911s.
