I just had a thought that makes no sense to me. If you can shoot .38 SPL through a .357.... then in theory, .38spl and .357 are the same diameter. AND... IF they are, why couldn't you shoot .357 through a .38?

That was all I could think. Or maybe the length of the cartridge

Close, it's the length of the brass.

.38 Spl; Case length 1.155 in (29.3 mm)
.357 Mag; Case length 1.29 in (33 mm)

This allows the shorter .38 to be chambered in the longer .357 cylinder. But not vice-versa.

    Capisce?

It is important to note that this was done quite deliberately. It was to keep people from blowing up 38 specials by trying to shoot 357 mag out of them. They did the same thing with 44 special and 44 mag as well as 45 colt and 454.

I am sure that Cane knows this. But, maybe not some of our new folks.

And a .44 mag will shoot a .44 special. Seriously, all of this info is here for the taking. Where have you been? Oh, nevermind...

Yes, but not the other way around. Also if you are one of the lucky few to have a 357 Maximum, it will shoot 357 max, 357 mag and 38 Special. I believe a 357 maximum revolver is dificult to come by.

Do not swap ammo in automatics. It is not the same thing. A 10mm is a longer 40 cal. Do not try to interchange either direction. That would be very dangerous. Automatics headspace off the mouth of the case. You could very well blow up a gun by using the shorter cartirdge. There are several different types of 9mm as well. None are interchangable!

There are no dumb questions here on the forum. Just asshats that make you little so they can pose as large brother!

Here are some more examples I just put together.

When it comes to safety, there is no such thing as a stupid question. I don't think Scull Crusher meant anything insulting by his reply. It is easy to read a tone of voice into a post that isn't really there.

The two samples on the right are from my Colt Government with the CCG 460 Rowland conversion kit.

I can shoot both 45ACP and the 460 Rowland round in the same barrel just like the 38/357
