I finally hauled my ultimate hunting blind up to the ranch friday, and was pleasantly surprised with the pictures and videos I got on the game cameras.

When we moved here over 30 years ago, this land was sterile.
When I realized the locals had hunted it completely out, I quit hunting and closed our place to ANYONE for hunting.
Soon, the rabbits and squirrels came back. Then the deer. Then the turkeys. We now have a very nice population here, but I continue to close it to hunting. I consider these game animals my post SHTF food supply.

30 years ago tons of the country was "hunted out". In 1978 when I got out of the Marines Ky had less than 9,000 deer killed in the state. Last year was 141.000 plus. Tenn, was the same as was lots of the country. Turkeys were a recent addition to my state and yours. As far as "hunters" killing them off that was LONG before you were born and I don't care if you are 90.

The Southeast has done a great job bringing back the wildlife, in fact almost to good. Entire subdivisions in the Northeast half the people have Lyme disease and half to take medicine the rest of their lives. Since the average home range of a deer is at least 1,000 acres the deer in your yard are fun to watch lots of them are getting killed on other property. Plus without a balanced buck to doe ratio the size of the deer will decline as will over all health.

And yes I'm jealous of you to be able to watch the deer like that. If nothing else mature does at least a few need to be taken out of the herd for over all health of them. Young does produce more bucks. Without a balanced herd you get a prolonged rut which causes the fawns to be dropped at a longer rate in the spring. Yotes get way more of them that way. Just a few things to think about.

    We have deer

In our yard almost daily...and squirrils, chipmunks, lots of rabbit. The deer as I understand are not "big" deer - though they look big to me. They come because we have protected areas on my property withy lots of native growth food they like. Best part is momma's always bring their babies with them..usually twins...my wife gets thrilled.

And as has been pointed out, if the SHTF, I have food :D

I hunt in North Texas, right on the Red River in Cooke county. Deer in our area have good body size, unlike those in south/south central parts of the state.

I am with you guys I do not hunt here on the property since I feed them and enjoy watching them. I do Coyote Hunt here in Tennessee and Pig Coyote Deer and Prarie Dog hunt in Texas.
I also live in the Boonies and love it!
