    Hello Firearms Talk Veterans,

I am very new to the firearm world despite being in the Navy for a few years (I know more about firing torpedoes than firing a firearm). Anyway, a former sheriff took me to the range 4 weeks ago to shoot her Glock. It was the first time I've fired a weapon in almost 7 years and probably the first time I've felt so alive in 10. I've got the bug now and have been back to shoot maybe 10 times, I even retrieved my H&K USP Tactical 45 out of storage. Now I'm looking to get a AR. I would like your opinions and thoughts on the Daniel Defense, Patriot Ordinance Factory, Colts, etc. as to what is a solid starter AR? Keep in mind my first ever pistol was the H&K USP Tactical 45 because I got a smokin' deal on it but also because as an engineer I love quality. Also, since I now live in California I need something these softies will let me shoot.

I look forward to your help.
    Respectfully,
    Izenrok

Daniel Defense, Colt, BCM, LMT, KAC. Probably the most well put together ARs on the market.

Bushmaster, DPMS, RRA, Stag, and many more make california compliant models.

There are a lot of good quality ARs out there... Bushmaster, Daniel Defense, Colt, Stag, they would probably just about all do the job and keep a smile on your face. I would reccomend that you purchase a complete factory rifle. A lot of AR guys build their own rifles and I think for the ones who know what they are doing more power to em. I don't have nearly enough knowledge to do that sort of thing though. I would prefer to handle a few completely factory models and pick out one that is up to manufacturer specs. This way I know I am getting what should be a reliable weapon and if it should prove otherwise, most manufacturers provide some form of warranty so fixing it is their problem, not mine...

You might want to hit the sticky posts in the AR section of the forum, there is a lot of good information there.

Since you are an engineer, and I won't hold that against you even though you types make my teeth itch :D, you may want to consider building your own AR instead of buying a package some mook-a-saurus put together for you.

The benefits are it's cheaper, you will learn the ins and outs of the weapon platform and you can select quality parts for each and every step instead of being tied to what the budget was for "platform x" from company Y.

    Just a thought.

Bushmaster and Daniel Defense are in completely different stratospheres.

Assembling your own isn't bad at all. I would recommend purchasing the complete upper then assembling your lower.

Daniel Defense is in the top 4 or 5 best ARs on the market as Bushmaster has anything but a steller reputation. That goes for both customer servise and quality of product.

I suggest the bushmaster carbon-15 series, I own one and i have found it to be very dependable, not a whole bunch of jams at all and they are in a decent price range.

    From Mo Town also

If you have a Cabelas by your house they are having Pre Black Friday Sales. A bushmaster carbine is $900. Here is a link to the gun itself on Bushmaster.

Bushmaster - Home Defense & Recreation Rifles
EDIT:The mag size is 30 not 10 like on Bushmasters' site

Also check out some local gun shops don't buys used unless you know what to look for in a damaged gun, some people love ripping off newer people. For example a junk barrel with messed up rifling. I'll make an AR buyers guide later. But price/quality ratio i would have to say DPMS and Bushmaster never messed with Daniel Defense stuff.
