I inherited a S&W revolver from my father-inlaw. It has a chrome finish with a barrel 2 inchs. V groove rear sight. Has a 6 shot cylinder. Serial#496xxx. It has the Smith trade mark emblem on the right side but has no model# or caliber listed. It will load a 38 short but will not load a 38 long. My local gun shop says it will shoot the 9mm or 38 short. The extractor looks like a normal extractor and not something that would pull out a 9mm. I would feel more comfortable shooting it if I knew for sure what caliber it was supposed to be.

    Scott,
It just reads 47192. Besides the Smith trade mark it only says "made in USA" on the right side forward of the trigger.

i am fairly knowegable abouth smiths. what does the barrel say. it should state caliber on right side of barrel. do not shoot anything and most especially a 9mm in the gun till this gets cleared up. anything i can do to help i will have a few books that specialize in smiths.

Does the barrel say "38 S&W ctg."?? (no Spl.)

If 38 special won't go all the way in, it might be a 38 S&W revolver. In a J frame
    that's a mdl 32 or 33. In a 6 shot? Model 11 maybe? Possibly a Victory model M&P
in 38/200 that was cut down and plated?

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT FIRING 9mm in it. Unless explosive disassembly sounds
    like a good thing.
