A friend wanted to know a little more about this SKS. He was wondering about value, after market stocks, and if refinishing the wood would hurt the value. I know it is somewhat rare for a SKS. It takes ak mags and I have never seen one with the Red Star scope and bolt cover. I am almost certain these are after market. Any help would be great.

Is that an SKS-D or SKS-M? Both were made to accept AK mags. Both are highly desirable. Not familiar with the scpoe/mount though

I believe that is a SKS-m. Those have the shorter barrel and thumbhole stock (paratrooper)
The SKS-d look loke a regular SKS but accept AK mags

That is prolly the best SKS I have ever seen.

I love everything about it, except the lack of bayonet. Needs a blade bayonet.

    Very Nice!

I'm not usually a thumbhole fan, but that looks nice with the scope.

I don't remember seeing a Tapco stock like the one I have that was made for the M or D models.

It looks to be the Chinese M type. You're right they are are pretty sought after. I watched one like mine wit ha Tapco stock and scope mount sell on gunbroker a month or so ago for about 1400 bucks. WAY OVER value but that was during the craze of the last craze. Last one I seen at not too insane prices went around 550.00. I honestly thought I was getting took on a 325.00 price tag a few years ago. But they are hard to get and I really wanted one.

TAPCO and a couple other companies make stocks for the M type SKS. THey have gone up a good bit too and you have to make sure to get one for a M or D type and without a bayonet cut.

    Here's mine..Old pic..I really need top update but ...

Right now M types are selling between 700 and 1200 on gunbroker. But again..Prices are as little goofy right now.

That thumb-hole stock is a newer model. They made them with a more standard looking stock in the beginning.

You can know for certain what model by looking at the serial and seeing if it has a M or a D in it. But I'd pretty much bet it's an M type by the stock. They are nice rifles, I'd hold on to it if I could. :)

I have a M that I love, but can't find the right AK mag to lock-up. I have filed Taco mags to try to get a fit to no avail. Any advice?

No M or D in serial number. It says it is a Sporter model it has a 93 followed by a 5 dight serial number.

Please do not mess with it. If you want tapco stuff just sell it. buy another run of the mill norinco and then tapco it to your hearts content.
