SKS not cycling

I picked up an SKS recently but it won't cycle ammunition. I tried pickup a Tapco mag, but the cartridge just gets hung halfway. Could the spring be wore out? If so, where would I pick up a new one?

When you say "hung half way" are you saying the round is being stripped off the clip my the face of the bolt and then gets hung, or is it getting hung halfway in the lower part of the mag?
It is only being pushed halfway out of the mag.
Is the bolt face making proper contact with the base of the cartridge? Is the bolt impacting the side of the case body and denting the case about half way down? Is the nose of the bullet sticking against the the front of the receiver or otherwise failing to clear into the breech.

Could be one or more of several problems. If the case is getting dented on the side the gun is short cycling. Clean the gas tube, piston and gas port. Leave these parts dry. Oil in the gas system will gum up and become very sticky.

If the nose is sticking, it could be a weak mag spring or feed lips that are out of whack.
FWIW, the SKS was designed around a 10 rd non-detachable magazine. Almost without exception, have heard complaints from everyone that has tried detachables, extended mags, aftermarket mags, etc. Sorry- wish I had magic wand that could fix for ya- but the SKS just does not seem to like those (and mine loads darned fast with stripper clips)

You stole the words right out of my mouth. I second this 100% and suggest finding a stock. non-detachable mag for it. It should work fine after that.
There are reportedly only two detatchable mags that work well with the SKS. The Topco 20 rounder and the Rifletech mags 37 rounder. The rifletechs are extrememly expensive.
