Ok boys when I get to HI I'm buying myself a new vehicle...I'm not shipping my ole' 98 Mazda B Series (Ford Ranger). Over to the islands...not worth it even though it would have been free.

Instead I need to establish some more credit...and I did just receive my bonus from the Navy 11,750 Dollars, (MUHAHAHAHAHA).

And I was just approved by USAA To purchase a 2010-2012 Vehicle up to 15k

So I have more money in my bank...and I just got this bonus.

    So 10+15K=Establish Credit...plus maybe....this?

    Congratulations on the bonus!

I don't know anything about owning and buying a car in HI, but i have always admired the rugged lil toyotas. That said, i notice the K&N cold air setup; i wonder how it was treated or if this was just done to make the demo sound more agressive. My car has a similar setup that i like, but most of the simpletons who mistreat their cars use something simlilar. Of course, the miles are very low.

I have a friend who owns an oil production company and the only thing they buy now are Tacomas. He says they have more power and better mileage than the domestic trucks he has been buying. He usually gets 4x4 3/4ton trucks, but I think the half-tons would be comparable. Those trucks he uses pumping and servicing wells get some rough use and hold up well.

Had an 04 Tacoma 3.4 v6, great truck, gas mileage sucked, 15 mpg.
Traded it for an 07 F-150, 5.4 v8, 19 mpg and a helluva lot more room.
That Toyota would take me places the Ford couldnt, but the mpg and space I wont trade for now, I'll buy another Ford!

Hawaii has a lot of offroad deals to mess around with and that smaller truck would be more maneuverable in the environment.

I have a Mazda B-Series Pickup I love right now...sound truck but I'm thinking this little 98 beater is done for now...she'll be a home vehicle when I come on leave or something.

Either way I want this guy...I hope they don't sell it for the 20 days I've got left til I get there.

Eh I've done with with a majority of my BAH....this is my dream car so I'm trying to set up some credit as well....not going to take a loan on a 10,000 Car....seems counter productive....and less yield on credit.

early 90's i was stationed in hawaii. insurance was crazy expensive and car theft was epidemic proportions.

    just something to think about.

so are you planning on keeping that dream truck and shipping it back when you are done? i would by perhaps a nice motorcycle and ship the old truck. drive the truck till it dies and save the tacoma for when you get home

The Navy Pays to ship 1 vehicle so once I'm stationed somewhere else then yes I will ship the vehicle with me so I'll keep it.

    They sold the one I want....but I found a manual 2010 for 20,600 in a 4 cylinder...I like it...same place too...but I don't know how to drive a manual but learning on a truck shouldn't be that bad.

Then I found this and it's modified to hell out.

And it's got less than 50,000 Miles.....probably someone's fun truck they modded but couldn't keep...and all these mods reduced the value of the truck....but actually I might like it...just wonder how much the loan could go down to if I go for a 2003

    Nice interior.

I don't know how much you will get to use the vehicle during while you are stationed in HI, but keep in mind that a truck, particularly a newer truck, will lose value with the passage of time. If you plan to keep the vehicle until the wheels fall off, then resale or market value of the vehicle will not matter much (a little on insurance cost for a more valueable vehicle).

Bank your money, and let the girls drive you around, come home with loads of cash, and some great memories, what will an old jap truck be worth in a couple years - - best advice you are going to get.

The problem with that is though I have banked a considerable sum of my money already....and I'd rather have a vehicle as well....but you know the deal.

How do the prices in HI compare with what you would pay for the same truck where you are? If you can get a better deal in SC, and the Navy will pay to ship the truck, buy it before you leave.
