I have a Mossberg 500 12ga with a 18 1/2 barrel. I have be told by someone, that it's not advisable to shoot a slug through it. I recently found some HD ammo that has 3 balls & a rifled slug. Debating on going with that, or just stick to my 00 buckshot.
Opinions on the ammo? Or the slug in a short barrel?
    Thanks in advance.

Someone lied to you. I had an 18.5" cylinder bore Mossberg with rifle sights. It was designed for slugs. Also had the 28" barrel with screw in chokes.

I use 00 buch for HD but I shoot slugs out of my rem 870 18.5 barrel with no problems. It might not be 100% accurate at long distances. Personaly I wouldnt use slugs for HD because im worried it will go through walls or the perp and endanger others in my house or even my neighbors. Plus believe it or not you do have to aim with a shotgun and slugs make it that much harder when you add in the factors of a HD situation. Your woken up by a thump or a glass break at 2am so you alittle groggy, your adrenaline will be pumping so bad that you will be a little jittery or clumsy and you might have to deal with other members of your family in the house so you just want to point and shoot and not take the chance of missing with a slug. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I am still leaning towards the buckshot. The whole reason why I would go for the shoty before the pistol is less worry of perfect aim.

I will suggest again that everyone should pattern their shotgun with their defense loads at defense ranges. 3-7 yards then work your way out to 25 yards so you know what it really does.

Shot mine at 15-20 ft from a paper silhouette (about what I was figuring for inside my house) it looked devastating. 1 shot looked like about 7 or 8 rounds of 9mm went through him in 1 blast.
Which is why no mater how deadly I might get with my pistol. If any one asks me "pistol or shotgun for HD?" Shotgun's got my vote.
And the more I think about it I'm probably not gonna get that slug/buckshot thing.
