I know NV can be expensive, what are some alternatives to shooting at night? If any at all. About 75 yards with .223,

Spot illumination and Tracers. The first is cheap, the second may not be available for your weapon of choice but will certainy cost more if it is. Neither is particularly useful in self defense unless you can get the target to hold a chem stick or your always packing tracers.

In the end, train how you will fight. If you want to be accurate in the dark, first make sure you can hit your target in the light, on the move and in defilade. When your good at that, fire the same standards during limited viability. If you truly want to fire in zero Vis, get night vision or dont bother, just a waste of good bullets (or get a shotgun and spray and pray!)!

I usually call for a fire mission from the mortars, and have them lob a couple of illumination rounds out there. :D

Night sights can HELP, but they do not illuminate target. Either you do that with a light, wait for target to skylight self against a lighter background, or self illuminate (muzzle flashes make great aiming points)

Do understand that your best night vision with the M-1 eyeball is not directly ahead, but off to one side. Do some reading on low light level vision, and learn to scan in low light.

the others posted as if it was self defense. but my first thought was hunting, so i will answer as such.. spotlights, cheap effect ways to light up a target at distances. be ready to shoot once its on the target generally wont stand still long after.

A sturdy AA flashlight with about 200 lumens or more, mounted below the barrel, will do a find job of illumination for a lower powered scope.

.22 bolt action with 3x9 with flashlight taped underbarrel.

This is my go to when I hear the birds making noise at night.
The flashlight provides decent illumination for determining the predator, and getting the cross hairs on target.

If there is a drawback, it is that the weapon is pointed on the suspected target, prior to identification. But then again, being on target, only requires firing when the target is properly identified.

I think the cheapest would be a Red Dot and "high Illumination" flashlight. Acquire target with light, then throw Red Dot on it, pull trigger quickly. This is my setup around my Farm.
Other than this, wait for a BRIGHT full Moon, with also using a Red Dot.

You can get early generation IR night vision for less than $1000.

It's no longer MilSpec, but if the target doesn't shoot back,. it will serve.

Laser Genetics ND-3. The poor man's night vision!
I've had this unit for a couple years and it works really well out to 100-150 yards, depending on the quality of the scope that you use with it. I have the original 32mm ND-3,I'd suggest getting the 40mm version for around $100 more.

I currently have mine mounted on my 458 SOCOM for hunting hogs at night, but here's a picture of it on my Savage 12FLVSS varmint rifle.

The cheapest solution I have is waiting for a full moon when there's snow on the ground.

For 75 yards you can buy Gen 1 rifle scope. of course you'll get not the best image but the price won't be high. anyway, the quality of the image depends on the brand so i think it's possible to choose a decent one. i've already mentioned about Armasight Orion as the price range is rather reasonable and the features are also not bad so i think you can be oriented on it and try to find something silimar
