what is a better first gun the service 4" or the tactical 5" both in .40

Depends on what you're looking for. I like the balance & the look of the 5-inch guns, but that is just me. I also like the slightly longer sight-radius.

I'm not sure there is enough difference in these guns to really make much of a difference. A lot of it probably goes to personal preference based on looks and feel.

A few grams of weight in the nose......? The longer barrel with have a different elevation curve than the shorter, and will be 1" harder to conceal.
