I have a friend that is interested in the history and value of a Colt Mk IV series 70 Government Model. He bought the weapon off his friends wife when her husband/his friend passed away. The weapon is in pristine condition.

I have zero knowledge in the area of Colt semi-autos and I was wondering if anyone could offer me some information on the weapon as far as value, history, and desirability go for this model of 1911.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

I have the serial number on hand so if there is a way to look up the weapon that would be great.

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried contacting Colt? I don't know much about them, but I do know that other mfrs will give up info to a specific serial number. I think Canebreak would know more than just about anyone on this matter. I hope you get your answer. :)

Normally there is a nominal fee involved. They will be able to tell you where they shipped the firearm to originally. Any documentation will make a firearm more valuable (even if it is an heirloom. Your kids would like to know about the firearm.) Pictures are big also.

    Contact Colt, and good luck

The above contact info is for Colt's Military/LEO section dealing with the AR line. Colt Defense

What you need is Colt's Manufacturing Co. which handles retail customers.

Give them the S/N and ask for the manufacture date (born on date). This is the only request from Colt that's free, save the phone number. Should you want Colt to research more information the Colt Archives Service results in a authentic letter tracing your firearm to its origins and not only to verify its authenticity but also to certify when and to whom it was originally sold. Depending on the model, the fee runs from $75 to 500+.

Excellent gentlemen thank you for the information.

Does anyone know how much the gun is approximately valued at in pristine condition?

I too have a Colt on the way...seller stated that it might be a Lew Horton...but did not confirm...its a Gold Cup Trophy polished stainless.....How would I go about getting some more info on the gun to set my mind at rest to the amount of coins dropped on such a fine weapon
