Anyone have luck making or buying a self resetting target for the .223? I have been looking at some do-all tagets but the reviews seem to be mostly bad. I am sure I could weld one together however i'm not sure what kind of steel to use, anyone have experience with these?

What kind of target are you looking to make/buy? A spinner? A staged knock down?

I was thinking a simple spinner target, I assume something like AR500 would give me the best durability?

I could make you some simple spinners that would easily handle 223. If you wanted to get fancy I could put them on bearings.

AR500 would be fine. I would also use a minimun of 1/2" plate.

I haven't made any but I could if folks were interested. The biggest problem is that I don't have a place where I can test them, never messed with steel plate and I'm not sure how the bullets respond to them. I don't want a stray round.

I could do pistols without a problem though.

The key is soft lead nose on these. That screws a guy on most store bought ammo. I prefer PMC Bronze and that aint soft nose.

I have been making my own out of AR500. You can shoot 3/8 Ar500 with FMJ till you go bankrupt. It will also take steel core a long time to render AR500 useless but because of the cost of the AR500 I never shoot AP at them but everything else is fair game. I haven’t had a problem with 3/8 all the way up to 30-06 FMJ. Closest I have shot is 50 yards with the 06 FMJ and it just leaves a small dimple.

This is the one shot with M855 5.56 at 100 yards the rest are FMJ from .223, 243, 30-06 and a couple 12 ga slugs

5/8" T7 with M855 and two 300Win Mag(holes) at 100 yards, the shallower ones are from 200 yards

I made a test target out of 1/2" AR400 and it held up alright shooting at 75 yrds. .223 HP's and 30.06 SP didn't seem to make much difference in the end result, there was substantial dents but it would take hundreds of rounds to render it useless. I will try AR500 next.
