    G'day fellas

After placing an order for a HOWA 308 I'm now in the hunt for a descent rifle scope to mount on it,I would personally like something with variable zoom say around 3x9x40,my budget would be no
More than $1000 with rings included,I've looked at luepold, redfield, zeiss,Nikon, swarovski and many others and can't decide,I'm sure there is somebody on this site than can stear me in the right direction as the scope with the package is not what I'm after......cheers

For that money you could get a Shepherd.

    Hi bud
Depends on what your using it for target or hunting , I assume by the magnification its hunting.

I have a howa and have a redfield revenge on it at the moment they are great value scopes and good quality . If you want top end then you have the budget for it and you have already mentioned a few of them, maybe also look at night force

If you want to go mid range and spend difference on other things bushnell make great scopes. I have just ordered a hawke sidewinder for target which has tactical turrets, another option. At shorter distances and magnification the mid range scopes hold their own against the top end scopes.

The differences on top end are small its down to taste or purpose .

If your howa is fitted with the piccatinny rail for your scope mounts you will probably need low mounts if your going for 40mm objective.

Enjoy, the howa is a great rifle .

    Thanks mate

I did have had a look today at the redfield revenge scopes in 3x9x50 with the mildot reticule and accu range, they seem alright for the price...I am not using the piccatiny rail mount as I have fat fingers and will make it awfully hard for me to reload the mag and have opted for the floor plate conversion kit with the 10 shot mag capability and I'm sure will come to good use,the rifle will basically be for serious hunting purposes as I mainly shoot in national parks for game council here in Australia so therefore a good quality scope is a must,I'll go have another look at redfield scopes again tomorrow but so far Nikon has caught my eyes.....any other recommendations are welcome......cheers :)

Trijicon Accupoints are really really nice and are extremely durable

Why would anyone want one of those crappy scopes.
They have a neat reticle, and it does work with most calibers, but I've seen $50 scopes with better glass than Shepherd uses.
Unless the quality of their glass has improved over the last 10 years, you couldn't give me one.

Zeiss Conquest - Swarovski Z3 - Sightron Big Sky or SIII - Weaver Super Slam or Classic Extreme - Meopta Meopro or Meostar - Minox ZA5 - Steiner Predator Extreme - Trijicon Accupoint - Vortex Viper PST or HS.
All of these scopes will suit your needs, and are very good hunting optics. It all depends on what you want in a scope.
I only use Burris Signature Zee rings on all of my scopes. They are the best rings on the market,IMO.

Pretty much agree with Tx. I'd say get a Night Force or Swarovski if you can, the others he mentioned otherwise.

Trijicon Accu point is another of the great ones. Same company that makes the ACOG for the military.

Ok people's here is what I decided to buy even tho I blue my budget way out of proportion by around $2000 odd so dollars

The scope I chose was the Nightforce 5x25x56 F1 BEAST with moar reticle, mate done a great deal on it at around $3200 mark.....I figured if I'm going to be shooting game for council there is no compromise for quality and precision especially when optics are involved, yes I did blo out my budget but I need this scope for what I do and IMO believe that I have made the right choice......thanks heaps to all the recommendations as I learn something knew everyday especially when optics are involved........cheers:D

My Howa varminter heavy barrel .308 uses a 4x12x50 Meopta Meopro that should run you about $500. It has the #4 reticle, no parallax turret. The comparable Zeiss in my collection is a 4.5x14x44 conquest and has the same reticle with parallax adjustment. It ran me a couple of hundred dollars more, but the quality of two optics is very similar.
