I realize this thread is useless w/o pictures. (there will be pictures) - camera phone is currently on the fritz.

Just picked up the SCAR-17S Cali. (FDE) 16.25" barrel.
It is everything I ever thought it would be!
Got to clean it out tonight so i can bring it to the range on the weekend.

Didn't realize that the lower is a polymer (plastic) and the the serial is printed on
the upper. I guess it makes sense that the lower is polymer, 90% of new pistol
designs seem to be doing that.

Since it's a Cali model the butt stock doesn't fold and there is a bullet button. =(

This rifle was clearly made for an optic as it's flip-up sights seem to be best
    kept flipped down.

QUESTION: What optic do you recommend I mount?
This will mostly be used for the range and some hunting (boar, white tail etc.)

Congrats! I have to ask though. You spent all that money on a SCAR 17S and you didn't even know the lower was polymer? Was it an impulse buy? :D

Personally I swear by a nice 4x trijicon ACOG, but possibly an eotech or mepro if you want a red dot.

    Never Forget.

+1 on a magnified optic. What distances do you anticipate?

I'd love to have the SCAR-17 .. In regards to your optic question, you have to ask what role your rifle is going to assume. generally speaking...

    - close range (100 yds) holographic sight
    - intermediate range (100yds - 300 yds) ACOG
    -long range (400yds < ) Telescopic

Just a tip.. Always have back-up flip sights installed on your rifle

Dauntless Marksman - I fully intend to keep the flip-up sighs on.

Here are some pictures the wife took of HER rifle. She doesn't have a fancy ring, but a fancy gun now.

I don't see this rifle shooting further than 400 yards at a range and 250 yards when hunting.

As much as other people like the ACOG style scope, i'm not that big of fan.
Also not that big of a fan of a red-dot

For this rifle i would like something with lower power to medium.

Love this style, but i feel like the lower powers limit the range of the rifle.
    1-4x20 Matte - M-223 - Riflescopes | Nikon Hunting

1.1-4x24 Matte - Monarch African - Riflescopes | Nikon Hunting

Love the power on this, but would like a smaller mm lens on the front:
    2.5-8x28 EER Matte - EncoreĀ® - Riflescopes | Nikon Hunting

Something like this in this price range with a little more zoom power.
Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm Rifle Scope w/ Matte Black Finish, Duplex Reticle 56700 Riflescope FREE S&H 56700. Leupold VX-II Riflescopes, Leupold Riflescopes.

Yes... a 10 month plus, multiple waiting list impulse buy.
Nobody in CA that I know of had one. Not even the 16.
Still haven't shot it, can hardly wait.

Haha.... Cool man! It looks pretty sweet.

Within 75 yards i'd say red dot. Anything more and I personally prefer a 4x ACOG.

Keep it updated with what you do.

EDIT: What will you be hunting with it?

I think 4x for inside of 300 yards sufficient for your intended use. If you are going for groups you'll probably want something stronger. How about an Eotech with a flip to the side 4x magnifier?

I feel that your optic choices are pretty good. Check brownells if you haven't already down so if you're still open to other options.. btw, the rifle looks extraordinary. If you're comfortable answering the question, how much did you and your wife spend on it?

All right guys. I wasn't able to make it to the range this weekend.
Reading through the manual, they mention that I have to clean before
    shooting.

"Never fire the rifle upon purchase without first cleaning it" - See PDF Page 15
    http://fnhusa1.com/manuals/2010_SCAR_16S-17S_OM.pdf

They say use SLP but i have shooters choice. Will that work and how much
do i have to scrub the barrel to get their junk out?

On any new gun I just run a dry patch down the barrel to check for obstructions and excessive oil. Some times the patch is pretty dirty, sometimes not. Now go shoot.

I went with a Leupold 3.5x-10 x 40 on my SCAR 17S, Its got illuminated Tactical Milled Reticle:

    used a Larue mount:

not a great day to sight in the scope - overcast - windy and rainy:

This was a typical 100 yard group, 10 shots, run of the mill Winchester White Box 147 grain FMJ:

I know its been proven to shoot must tighter with Federal Match 162grain, but I am very happy with the rifle's performance with the common ammo.
I am not a good shot by the way.

Goretrro, that's the best report i EVER did see on the SCAR 17 (Scope and shooting results)
We can't wait to get to the range but this weekend it's ALSO going to be rainy.

QUESTION: how did you get that scope in FDE? It looks great with that rifle.

I noticed you went with the Magpul fore grip. I just got, and minuets ago, installed the
Tango Down Vertical Grip in FDE.
It was EXCEPTIONALLY tight and I had to use a mallet to tamp it into place one registry at a time.

    it's not going ANYWHERE.
