Looking to get a .243 and I am stuck on which gun to get. I think I have narrowed it down to the Savage 11 Trophy Hunter XP, or the Marlin X7S. I can get the Savage 11 for about $490, and I can get the Marlin for $360. Both have adjustable trigger, I just don't know which one is the better? Both come with a scope, the savage has a nikon prostaff, the Marlin has a bushnell. Both scopes are 3x9, but I was told that the nikon was worth a good deal more. Is it enough to make a 130 difference??

Im in a similar situation too. However, my Savage option is a second hand model 110 (chambered in 30-06) for roughly the same price at $450. I started another thread in another sub-forum. It sparked a debate if older model Savages are 'crap.' The hold back on my decision is the brand of scope that is mounted.

The answer I got form the other thread was IF the 110 has a high end scope (nikon or leopuld) mounted buy it! One person said he would give $200-250 for the rifle only if it doesnt have a high end scope.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with the older Savages. if it's used see if they will remove the scope and adjust the price accordingly, then buy the scope you want.

This is like the third post on this from the same individual.

OP, please post only once and in the correct area.

I see a lot of people talk about older savages, I think most of the negative talk is because the lack of the accutrigger. It's not so much that they are crap, just that the accutrigger makes the newer models that much better. I for one love My Savage 111 in 30-06, it is the most accurate rifle I personally own.

Both the Savage and the Marlin are darn good rifles and I'd be happy with either one.
