:DLets say you were in 19th century Japan surrounded by 50 Samauri's approaching from 100 yards away and you had your choice of one of these guns to defend yourself, and these were your only choices-1.Any good quality AR-15 with 100 rounds of ammo,or 2.A Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 pump with 100 slug and buckshot variety of shells.Tell me any other good guns you'd use if you must but try to answer my main pump shotgun vs AR question.:D

I"ll take the AR for range, accuracy and speed over a pump in that situation

I think I would just beg for mercy. Now I'll tell you why. 100 rounds, and 50 samurai I don't consider to be very good odds. Now I'm a great shooter, but not the best. I'm sure these sammys will be moving, and 2 shots per sammy just isn't enough. Think about this- If you miss 3 shots, then you have an unwounded, trained and capable sword wielding warrior coming at you, while in the meantime, once you run out of ammo you have nothing but a club and most likely no where near the same quality training as the sammy in how to use such a weapon. It's just a no win situation. And that's only with 3 misses. What if you miss 4 shots, you have 2 to deal with, and the odds just keep getting worse with each miss. And that's not even accounting for the ones that will take more than 2 shots to take down.

My second option would be to run.

Are they on foot or horseback? Is their a clear shot to all of them or is it hilly or otherwise occluded terrain? My concern is the range and reload time for the 870. So I'll go with an AR to be safe.

I was thinking all on foot and maybe a few hills.

AR-15....Let Samauri get close enough for a shotgun and you are already dead! A Samauri archer could kill you at 50 yards!

M2 Browning .50 BMG. One hit from one of those babies is a kill shot (pretty much anywhere on the main body). I would have 2 chances to hit each samauri and the round could go through one and go into another.

Remember, .50 BMG beats sword. :D

Of your two options, i picked the AR.

I would rather have my SKS; that bamboo armor might shut down the .22. :p
Further, my Norinco SKS is naturally anti-Japanese and would still have the spikey bayonet if i ran out of ammo.

edit* I would have to insist on good quality BRASS-cased ammo for the AR.

That depends. I'll take my sword against another guy's .50 in a 10x10 room with each of our weapons not at the ready. :)

If your in a 10x10 room with a samauri with your weapon not at the ready, There is not much of a chance of killing him before he gets to you. Not a situation I would like to be in.:D

Well, I'll go with the AR 15 for one reason, the 5.56x45/.223 can penenatrate metal aka armor much more effectively than a 12 gauge. If they were not armored then I would take an AK47.

    50 Samurai?!

White flag and hope for a merciful beheading?

Have you READ the Book of Five Rings?!

A Samurai was trained to fight as well as TEN warriors he would be facing on the field of battle.

Miyamoto Musashi circa 1645, the author, was a renowned samurai and swordsman. He is reported to have had over 60 duels, 1/3rd of which he fought with a wooden boken against live steel and was never defeated.

The Samurai Yumi, or longbow, was still used by the Shogunite AFTER the invention and field use of black powder firearms!

Alone? Against 50 legit Samurai? You are Effed worse than the new girl on the porn set.

I'd say even with the vaunted Ma Duece chewing up terra ferma, you would have to rotate 360 degrees, counter reload time, fatigue and sleep.

I'd be looking for air support and an "Exit Stage Right" sign....

A general rule of Musashi too, a duel should never last longer than 5 seconds. You mentioned his wooden boken, but forgot about one of his most famous duels, fought with a boat paddle. Also one of the few who taught and practiced dual wielding. Freakin awesome warrior.
