I need advice for some 3" sabot slugs for my 20 gauge. When I passed hunters ed in 4th grade I got two guns that year; my 870 youth 20 gauge and my marlin 1894fg in 41 magnum. The first time I shot the 20 was at a youth pheasant "hunt" I went to. At the time it was the hardest kicking gun I had ever shot, I was afraid of it until last year. Now I shoot sabot slugs out of my dad's 12 gauge. I'm saving up for a full size buttstock for my 20 gauge. I also plan to get a slug barrel for the 20 because it's much easier to find slugs than any other ammo. Any advice would be appreciated.

The 20 gauge is the pump gun. The single shot is a 410.

I have a youth 870 also. I haven't used 3" shells though. The Remington 2 3/4 slugger rifled slugs work good for me.

Don't bother with 3" shells, if you can't kill it with 2-3/4 shells a 3 or 3.5 won't do it either.

You can kill it deader though.

With a 20 ga there is a huge difference in the velocity of a 3" and 2 3/4" slug. For bang for your buck I like the federal fusion sabots. Winchester bonded sabots are the most accurate in my gun. The federal sabots are certainly accurate enough for hunting. Every sabot I have tried in my 12 ga Mossberg 500 shot under a 3" group at 100 yards. The targets I use for slugs has a heavy lined 3" square in the center. That means every shot was in the square. At 75 yards regular 1600 fps winchester slugs touch the line on the same target.

Be very certain you understand - You must have a RIFLED barrel for sabot slugs. Sabots through a smoothbore will NOT give satisfactory results beyond 10 yards.

Not all "slug" barrels are rifled.

The OP should have a look at ammoseek.com there is no shortage of 41 rem mag ammo.

If you buy a new barrel for your shotgun avoid the cantilever barrels. Everyone I know that hunts a lot has had problems with cantilever barrels. You can get a side saddle mount for a scope if your gun is not drilled and tapped.
