So I'm in the market for a compact 9mm.

I'm pretty much narrowed down to a S&W M&P or a HK USPc

leaving money out of the equation, which would you choose/why?

    Thanks, any input is appreciated.

choose what fits you the best. Shoot them both and see what you like. I have the M&P9 FS and have been very happy but you will have to try them yourself and see what you like.

Both are great guns. Which one fits you better?

The indoor range that I use has an M&P 9mm for rent and they say it has held up like a Glock. High praise from the guys that see what a lot of use in a short period of time with mediocre ammo can do to the average handgun.

Let's see...What would I do? I would go M&P, but you are the only one who will know for sure.

I've had good success with S&W Customer Service and would weigh that in as a factor along with form, fit and function.;)

6 of one, half-dozen of the other. Go with what feels good to you.

HeHe, that's a good recommendation for the H&K, I've never had a need for Customer Service for any of my H&K's.

Once you have an H&K you'll never go back...

I will upfront admit I am fond of S&W. I do not own an M&P or an HK (handgun). As an Armorer and Firearms instuctor, I have some opinions. Take them for what they are worth, they are MY opinions based on some facts.

M&P - The mag release is reversible for lefties. The full size mags will function in the compact.

USP - dual side mag release is useable for either hand. Mags can be accidentally released if your hold is not correct. Mags can be inserted backward under stress (USP is the only gun I have ever seen that will do this). Full size mags can not be used in the compact pistols. The design puts the barrel higher in relation to your hand which can lead to more felt recoil and slower follow up shots. The HK's tend to be supremely accurate. The most accurate DA/SA .40 cal pistols I have ever shot are USP's. The only .40 cal pistol I have ever shot that was more accurate was a custom STI. HK barrels are stronger than anything I have ever encountered. I have seen a USP .45 experience a squib load and have a second round fired behind the lodged bullet with ZERO damage!

No matter which one you choose, shoot it a bunch and get good with it. Neither will dissapoint you.

Robo, I just dug out 2 USP's and neither would allow the mag to be inserted backwards, irregardless how much "Stress" I could put under them...

    hk vs sw

Compare the controls -- I particularly like the decock/safety level on the HK. Also, as a pure psych matter, I associate HK historically with automatic innovation and Smith with revolver innovation -- an HK seems somehow cooler. However, if you are into built-in crimson trace lasers, HK seems to be far behind Smith.

I have not tried it on the compact models, but the full size guns will definately do it

Robo, I have no idea what Gen. USP you are talking about.
I took 2 USPs out of the safe, 1 standard .45 acp, and an Elite .45 acp and neither would accept a mag "backwards".
If you encountered this, 1 thing that I would do is send it back, such a thing should not be tolerated.

As always, I would echo what was said by others, try both out, both are quality guns, see what fits and feels right for you.

That said, I have rented the HK, liked it, but wasn't for me....... I do own 2 M&P's the 9c and the 9Pro.....love both, the 9c is my winter carry and the 9Pro is more of a range gun, which BTW I absolutely LOVE to shoot, has a little lighter trigger and a longer barrel which make it a dream at the range

The H&K is .8in wider, 2oz heavier, .1 inches longer but slightly thinner.

    H&k ~ 750 from gunbroker listings
M&P 579.99 at bass pro (cheaper online)

    I own a M&P9c and HAD a glock 26 :D

I never tried a H&K i'm sure I would like it but ignorance is bliss and I'm $250 richer.

Both are fine pistols so it will be hard to go wrong. I have shot both but a big fan of the M&P. I carry a full size M&P45 and have bought two of the M&P9C, both I ended up giving to people I love because it fit them well and something I know they will carry and practice with ofen.

The M&P IMHO is a quality pistol that fits the need of the owner well, is easy to operate and preforms as expected everytime. It's a pistol I would trust my life with.

Get the one that will fit and work for your intended use.
Truth be told, they are both fine weapons.
Money aside I would take the HK, for the purely nonsensical reason that I think it looks better (of course opinions vary).
Plus, I prefer the old school double action design, but thats really nit picking.

I carry a HKUSP9C everyday. Goes bang, even when full of lint.

Looks like an old thread and sure the OP already bought something but I would say, if you have the money: H&K.

But before jumping on the USP, try a P30, or P30L/LS. Just hold it and you'll see why...
