I have a Smith & Wesson Model 36 with a 2" barrel I'm quite fond of, yet I notice that most all, well virtually all, I see for sale have pinned barrels, but mine doesn't? Is this something that was done during a particular time period, or is it fairly common and I'm just not seeing them? Any clues on this?

Well I partially found the answer to my own question .. I wrote to S&W and they said my Mod 36 was a 1985 issue, I had assumed that the non pinned barrels were older than the pinned ones, that the pins came later. Oh well, so much for thinking.

S&W dropped the pinned barrel in the M36-1 in 1982. They apparenyly didn't consider it enough of an engineering change to come out with a new dash number. The 36-1 was started in 1967 and the 36-2 wasn't until 1988.

Thanks for your answer Dean, I greatly appreciate it. I've always loved these little guns but didn't know as much about them as I seem to be learning lately. I'm really fascinated by the Model 50 which they say was produced between 1955-1975, it was said in the article I read that this was the same as a model 36 but produced as Model 50 with target sights in 2" and 3" barreled models, but I've also seen a few people advertise a model 36 with target sights too. I like the round butt models, not sure why but just do .. I've seen one listed as a model 50 with a round butt, and also one with a square butt. Never the less these are remarkable little guns and I really do like them.
