    Ruger SP101 (pix)

I fella I swap with from time to time sent me a PM on a local forum that he wants to unload a Ruger SP101 in .357 for a 9mm. The Ruger comes with 2 sets of grips, a speedloader, and a few other goodies. I have a basic XD service model I don't shoot much and I was toying with making the swap. For what I have in the XD it's a good swap value wise but I've never even held an SP101. For those of you with experience, will this make a good truck gun? I kind of miss my J-frame S&W so is this a suitable substitute?

The SP101 is a good revolver. I've been a Smith fan forever but would have no problem with the Ruger. It's been a little while since I had one but I'm sure they are as good as ever.:)

It's a fair deal. You'll find that the SP101 is trouble free and reliable. As far as power goes the .357 blows 9mm clean out of the water. About the only thing you'll give up is capacity. I have a S&W Model 60 I carry in my truck and I just love those small frame .357's. I'd do the trade!

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking about this being my truck gun as my J-frame was before I traded it...

I have the SP-101 in .327 and one in .357. Best guns in the world. However I am greedy and I want those and a 9mm. Am thinking about the SR9c. Best thing about the revolver is that it's easy to clean, and more reliable than an auto. I think you would win in this trade.

As with anything else Ruger makes, they are built like tanks. If there is anything in my collection that I would not be concerned about throwing in the glove-box, not seeing for a long time, then pull it out and depend on it; it would be the SP101.

It's a Ruger .357. What else do you need to know. ;)

One point that hasn't been mentioned is the weight difference between a S&W newer model J frame, which is 15 oz, compared to the Ruger SP101 which is at least double that, not that your truck will give a damn...

I'm really pleased with this swap. I threw a few $$$ with my XD as this SP01 came with some nice goodies. It has a fresh night sight on the front, the Coco-Bolo grips, the speedloader, and the JIT slide holster. I'll be glad when year-end is over so I can try this little fella out...

I'm pretty sure you'll really like it Dave. Being heavier than the J Frame makes it much more pleasant to shoot with .357 magnums.

I put the Hogue grip on mine. Made a world of difference with the magnum loads.

Nice pistol. Im thinking about one of those myself for carry. I carry the xd40 now and am tossing around the sp101 or the LCR.

Just ordered a set of Hogue rubber grips for it as well as some mags for my Sig 228 (CDNN cheap weekend shipping). I'll be really glad when this week is over as my schedule will go back to normal and I actually may have time to get to the range. Even though I haven't shot this one yet, it's loaded with some .38 +P and is going in my truck today...

I think you made a good trade. You gave him a good gun and you got one in return. I love my SP.
