Ok I have after shooting a buddys kimber come to the realization that I want a 1911. I have no where near the money that he spent on his. He suggested that I check out a Rock Island. Has anyone ever shot one of these? I can get one for about 380.00 from a local dealer. Which is a far cry from the 1k that my bud has wrapped up in his kimber. Suggestions? Comments? BTW trying to keep the cost down to keep the peace in the house I am sure most if you guys understand that!!

The Rock Island is a very good entry/starter 1911 for one on a budget. I own one and think it shoots just as well as my Kimber. I picked mine up for around $385 NIB. Never had a single problem with it shooting anything that I put in it, even the cheap rounds, the only thing is that the hammer will bite you on occasion. Can't help you with your locality put look around you'll find one for that price. This is my Opinion others with much greater knowledge then myself will be along to give their thoughts.

Might have been better to post this in the 1911 section.

OK, forget the Colt snob is in the room.

    I would jump on a $380 RIA 1911 in a NY minute!

I would prefer a RIA over any tupperware glockinkaboom!

Holy crap!!! You really hate Glocks

(No offense to the RI, I have NO experience with 1911's)

Like a lot of 1911 folks, I started out with RIAs and they are fine guns for the money. I would offer one piece of advice though - save up another $100 or so and go for the RIA Tactical. The base gun has tiny GI sights - most folks do not like them and to upgrade easily costs the $100 or so difference between the 2 models...

Ok well I did it. I went and picked up the tactical RIA .45 acp. Took it right out to the desert and while it was not as nice as the Kimber I have to say that it was AWSOME. I threw about 400 rnds down range at some milk jugs and what a kick!!!! Colt did something right when he designed this weapon. I think with a little trigger work and some different grips this will be a tack driver. Thanks for the info guys for the money I spent 420.00 it was so worth it!!!

    BLASPHEMY!!!

Although I hold Sam Colt in high regards, he DID NOT design the 1911!

Mr. Browning was the genius behind the 1911 and the .45 ACP round to go with it!

Enjoy your RIA, change the grips but please don't mess with the trigger. My bet is that it's just fine and the only thing needed is more use!
