What exactly is shot through a rifled shotgun barrel? Sabots? Regular bullets? Can you fire shot through a rifled barrel?

A rifled shotgun barrel is used for sabot type slugs. Regular rifled slugs do best in a smoothbore barrel. You CAN fire shot through one, but the spin imparted to the plastic shot cup causes the shot pattern to open dramatically (centrifugal force) and it will resemble a donut.

Thank-you. I feel like an idiot. I knew all along that shotguns fire slugs. That's what I meant by bullets. Sorry
