What shotgun is better? The 870 or the 500?

Mossy 590 mariner with 9 shell capacity. Research to see why. Safety on top where thumb sits. All weather gun. Navy uses it due to salt water proof. 9 rounds! Better quality barrel and parts. Do not ask about soda, it was a joke about Bloomberg.

870 Express quality is third-world as is Rem's customer service that you'll probably need. IM&MO'sOs.

More modifications available for 870. Pistol grip is not a good idea for 500 (Not my thing anyway, but many like those) because of the safety location.

    Glock or 1911? Whatchyallthink?

They are both over 10 million and going strong, in spite of some people hating either one.

    Here's the Thing About That

870 was launched by a brand name company directly in 1951 and sold 10,000,000 in Apr. 2009. Little-known Mossberg started selling the 500 as hardware store brands in 1960 and sold their 10,000,000 in Apr. 2013.

The 500 has obviously caught up and surpassed the 870 literally and figuratively. And there are reasons for that including reliability, pricepoint, ergonomics, the firm's customer service and innovation as well as its OEM and after-market versatility.

Damn that's nice. Perfect. Couldn't ask for more and there's none better. Beautiful. I LOVE Dr. Pepper and I'm so thirsty!

    Gun's OK too.

Kidding. ...yours has to be the best of its type on the market today.

The position of the safeties on the guns should be something to consider

    Exactly..

Btw CHLChris, there are actually more after market parts for the 500. Gotta be 25 different models of just the 500 coming out of the Mossberg factory.

Randy. No offense meant by this, but it has to be said.

Asking which is best between these 2 shotguns is like asking a room full of construction workers which brand makes the best 1 ton truck. In all likelyhood, you will get a d@mn near even split in your answers, at best. Or worst case scenario, you will get flying fists and blood on the floor.

If you are posting to determine which would suit you best, I can not answer that, as I am not you. My advice to you is to find 2 or more friends that own 500s and 870s, and ask them if you can go out with them and shoot their shotguns. Offer to buy the shells, and in most cases they will probably say yes. Then you can make an informed decision as to what will work best for you, and what won't.

I own both shotguns, and I have a slight preference towards the 870. I am a shorter, left handed shooter, and the 870's ergonomics are more suited to me. Just MHO, YMMV.

^^^^^ If you can't shoot each one, at least handle each one. Whatever feels more comfortable/ natural is the one.

I've owned an 870 since 1992. Handled the Mossbergs, shot them and enjoyed it. I'm glad I own my 870.
