Ive been reloading 55 grain hp bullets with 19 grains of imr 4180 ( i believe it is off the top of my head.) I recently bought 1k rounds of 55 grain fmj for plinking. My reloading manual only gives data for the hollow points. Is it safe to load the fmjs with this same recipe or is the different bullet going to give issues?

Best thing to do, use the same data, but start a little lower. It's what I've done if I can't find any data for a Certain bullet type. Same weights seem to be fine.

same weight of boat tail, spire, softpoint, or fmj and it wont matter. The manufactures don't test every brand of bullet made, but as long as it is the same gr. then you will be fine. Start at the low end of the data scale and work up a load that is right for you and your gun. Just never go lower than what the book tells you, as underloading a rifle shell is more dangerous than overloading it.

Thats kind of what I figured i just wanted to be sure. Ive heard when reloading a jacketed bullet you should use the alloy data. Not sure if that applies to rifle calibers and fmjs or if its just for jacketed pistol calibers.

Not exactly. Different bullets have different bearing surface, jacket thickness, jacket material, etc. The best answer is when you change any component, you must work up a new load. The practical answer is as long as you are not dealing with a max load there should not be a problem.

Yeah i never reload to the max. I think max load in that recipe is 21 grains. I load at the minimum or just above. As long as my action functions and my groups are decent thats good enough for me. Im not a punching the same hole kind of reloader. My rifle shooting skill set isnt that high even if i had the perfect ammo.
