Has anyone tried Tailboss for reduced loads in your center fire rifles? There are a number of medium capacity cases that will use Trailboss for about 1/2 of normal velocity. Hodgdons loading data lists the calibers, loads, and stats. I am going to load some up this weekend just to see how they work I'm thinking that a 1400 fps .243 would be an awful good starting load to get a kid on target.

Bill yes I use it some. The stuff is fluffy like new snow. They can only get 12 ozs. in a 16 oz. jar. I tried it in some handgun rounds didn't like it. I do have a 16 grs. 45-70 load with a 305 cast that gives up 1,100 fps in SRC Mdl. 86. This is a fun load.

Thats low enough pressure that you could use it in a trapdoor then also couldnt you? Ahh,,,I'm liking this more and more. I was just over there looking at reduced loads for .30-06, .308, .270, .243, and others that I have,,,,,I can put the girls on those to get them started. From what I saw, its quite a bit under the velocity of other popular powders on given cartridges. But, for kids, or for survival, how much more do you need to bring in some meat for supper? 100 gr bullet at 1400 fps from your .243 would sure nuff put out the lights if you used head shots. Makes a pound of powder go a lot farther, but for starting kids or women or timid men out on their first day at the range, it'd be just the ticket.

Ahh, I see in the search that there was a similar thread on this subject 2 years ago,,,,I didnt see that before. Oh well, maybe most of the other people didnt search for it either.

This powder is made to replace black in Ctg. guns. The product is so bulky that a 45-70 case is full with 20 grs. Yes it is a Sub 24,000 CUP ideal for a STD rifle.

Can you compress it?

This is used for cowboy loads to duplicate blackpowder Ctg. loads. You will have to compress this powder under the big slow slugs. I have used it under a 500 grs. cast in my 45-110. I doubt its benefit with jacketed bullets bottle necks, don't know for sure?

The problem I had with it was it was too fluffy. It did not want to fall through the Dillon powder funnel. Every 3rd or 4th charge got hung up. Had to tap the side every time to make sure it all fell properly.

I have tried it with all sorts of loads from subsonic 223 to reduced 308. It really didn't stabilize the bullets that I was using in the 308 but the sub loads out of my AR work great. So, just keep in mind some loads won't perform like you expect them to at the reduced velocity.

700VS in .308 is my most accurate bench,cast bullet gun.There was no comparison between Trailboss and the usual SR4759 loads.The gun gets 5 shots(100yds) into the .3's regular enough to keep me entertained.

When Trailboss first came out,I called Hodgdon and spoke with one of their tech guys.Was underimpressed with his rhetoric......which then sort of carried over with poor performance(in above rifle).And I really like Hodgdon powders.They're my go-to in several calibre's.Trailboss may work in something,I just haven't found it?
