I'm wanting a semi auto rifle that is powerful and accurate enough to hunt deer with but also fun to fire shots quick at the range. I've been looking at the ar 15 and mini 14 in the 6.8 but idk so any ideas?

Yup, in the brush filled woods of MS, it has been called the "poor man's deer rifle" by many. Just get some soft point ammo for the hunting and save the FMJ's for the plinking.

Scopes are a problem though but unneeded at brushy range.

Depending on your budget, you could get an AR15 in 5.56 and a spare upper in 6.5 Grendal. $1500 should get you there, thats with quality parts.

If you are patient you can build a 5.56 rifle from Palmetto State Armory for like $800, maybe less. Alexander Arms has 6.5 Grendal uppers for $800. Two great calibers, one great price.

    I second SKS.

    It's the most underrated rifle.

Just get you a good mini-14 or AR in 5.56. I have both and at ranges I hunt here in AL. the 223 has no trouble killing deer or anything else you are likely to encounter. SKS is not a bad choice but from my experience the mini-14 and the AR are both more accurate. Plus Im a made in the USA type of guy.

both good choices, but ar is more acurate and better twist for heavier bullets (62-70 gr. for deer)

Oh yes. AR all day! The options are literally limitless with them!! If there was just 1 rifle to have, it'd be an AR. Get a couple high-cap mags, (depending where you live), get out to the woods and just blast away!! Even when it's not deer season!!

The AR is just so versatile. I've got 'em in 5.56 and 300 Blackout. For short range hog hunting the 300 Blackout is my choice. I load 110 & 130 gr Hornadys for that purpose. Working on another AR build right now.

You have great taste! 300 Blackout is one of my favorites. Never thought to take it for pigs but now that you mention it, I think I'll have to give it a shot! (No pun intended)
