Thank you all. I"m going to go with the springfiield. As for a scope, what would your recommend - I would like to pay under 400.00 if possible.
What sort of optics do you want? Long range, medium range and close quarters are pretty different beasts.

Simmons makes decent budget scopes for both medium and long range. Some of the lower end Leupolds can be had for that price and will work well for the medium and long range shooting. You can pick up a decent red dot scope for close quarters shooting for that price also.

This is what I plan to strap onto my M14 when I pick it up: http://www.leupold.com/tactical/pro...copes/mark-4-1-5-5x20mm-mrt-m2-illum-reticle/ They sell for a touch over $800, but I'm sure you could find something similar for $400. The 1 1/2-5x has you pretty well covered from 50 yards out to 500 or 600 yards.

The mil dot looks like it would be hard to use - is it?
I've used quite a bit and had no problem picking it up. I've worked with people who couldn't make heads or tails of it though.

If you're looking for a ranging reticle, and have the cash, you might want to check out a Pride-Fowler: http://www.smithenterprise.com/products18.html

They're set up to be a much quicker and intuitive system than Mildot.
