They're an M14 too. You'll save a little cash by getting Springfield over the Smith, but you get what you pay for. Avoid the Springfield SOCOMs though.
What sort of optics do you want? Long range, medium range and close quarters are pretty different beasts.
Simmons makes decent budget scopes for both medium and long range. Some of the lower end Leupolds can be had for that price and will work well for the medium and long range shooting. You can pick up a decent red dot scope for close quarters shooting for that price also.
I have an AR w/eotech sight already, so this is going to be my long range gun. Being able to go from 50 yards out to 500 or 600 yards sounds like the ticket.
They're set up to be a much quicker and intuitive system than Mildot.
