if i wanted to rebulid a rifle what would be a good project to start on. i am thinking about a model 700 or a model 70. if the rifle has a regular barrel can i put a heavy barrel on it? and if i put a different barrel on a gun do you have to change the action or any thing on it? any way can use some pointers if anybody got any.

The simplest rifle that you can work on yourself is a Savage 10/110 series or any of the other variations.
All you need is an Action wrench and a Barrel Nut wrench. If you change calibers that don't have the same style case head, you'll also need to change the bolt head.
Savage rifle's are just an adult lego set,and pretty simple to work on if you have the tools and knowledge.
If changing a barrel, you will also need some Go/No Go gauges.

I just changed the trigger/barrel/barrel lug/barrel nut/bolt handle/scope base on my 110FLP-300 WM Tactical rifle today in a couple hrs.

Most other brands, require a gunsmith on a barrel change.

I agree with the Hillbilly. I have several Savage rifles and several more barrels laying around for when I shoot one out or just want something different.

I am a Remington guy for the most part! But the guys are correct! SAVAGE would be the ideal project rifle. I have a 110 Predator Model myself and it is a fine rifle. I have thought about someday in the future of changing calibers on it. At the present it is a 223/5.56 and I possibly might change it to Rem.
22-250 or Win. 243. I use it for Coyote hunting along with my RRA AR.

    ............

how much barrel work i would have to have a gun smith to do. i saw in the midway usa that thay are threaded and chambered with head gauge and no go gauge and instructions.

On brands other than Savage, you would need a gunsmith to remove and install a different barrel. It can be done by yourself,if you have the tools and the know how,but Savage actions are the easiest for a do-it yourself gun.

You can buy ready to install barrels from just about every barrel maker for a Savage.

If you don't have a rifle to rebuild, it would be easier and cheaper to buy what you want to start with. It's definately not a novice level undertaking, even with a Savage.

    With a Savage it is!
If you have any mechanical ability, you can completely tear down a Savage, and build a new one in a matter of a couple minutes or for some a couple hours.
