this is my first year squirrel hunting which would be better for me a 22 or a 20 gauge
Are most of them going to be setting ? If not can you hit one running with a .22 ?
a lot of it is personal preference. i was taught to hunt squirrels with a 22lr. had some uncles who hunted with shotguns. walking thru the woods, hunting them as you see them in the trees, i would go with the shotgun. if sitting on the ground and waiting, i would hunt with a 22lr. some places we use to hunt had lots and lots of squirrels, and you could sit down next to a tree, shoot one, wait a couple a of minutes, then get another. i use to be able to get 10-15 easy that way.
I always hunted squirrel with a .410 when I used to hunt them.
That is not a stupid question by any means! I can't answer it though. I always used a .22 with a scope, because it's what I had. I just didn't feel right taking a 12 gauge squirrel hunting. I know you're talking about a 20 vs .22, I'm just pointing out that these were MY choices, a 12 or .22. So I took the .22
Now if you had said .22 or 410, I would have said 410 with 3in. #4`s. I just think anything over a 410 is a bit much. But if your chose is .22 or 20ga. well I don`t know take your pick, if you choose the 20ga. use big enough shot that it goes through, bigger than 6`s that way you don`t get a lot of little shot in the meat.
