Thanks to all for the info....... and the humor...
My last question on the subject is:
Where in the world did the barrel - length forearm come from?... is it an add on like the side plates? I have researched the model 44.. from several sites..saw many pix... but none showed a model 44 with such a long forearm...

Gun owners back then were no different than now. Customizing your guns is something many enjoy. Now anyone can do it much easier with all the "drop-in" parts available(look at all the stuff for a 10/22 or a 1911). Back 75 years ago you had to be handy or take it to a gunsmith. Your rifle had alot done to it. This is not good or bad, it just makes your gun a one-of-kind rifle. Enjoy it.
