    I used to know this but forgot, was it the very 1st Series - Series 80? 81? - that has like no parts/aftermartket support anymore and that smart money is to look for the next series or newer Mini-14?

    Thanks!

    Great question, I was going to ask something similar. IIRC they started at 180 and went through 189 then changed numbers so now we've got 580, ect. but I'm not totally schooled on Mini's so any help would be much appreciated.

    Compare the price with a ranch model if you want to scope the rifle, easier to get rings than a side mount. If you are using for short range shooting your fine. I would not pay more than $400 for a non ranch or standard mini. You can get a ranch model for $450-500.

    Excellent link. So, it looks like if a person had the funds the newer 580-581 with the heavier barrel would be the way to go. I might shop around for one when the money becomes available. Thanks again for the link.;)

    Thanks for the advice! Confirms that my FTF WTT in SW-PA isn't out of the line of reality then. Have had it posted in a WTT for an U/F WASR for over a month but zero takers. Maybe I had to high an opinion of a low-miles original RAAC-imported gun??

    Just in case anyone here is from the Pittsburgh area, link to pics;

    I handled one with the new barrel profile and "poly" stock, nice but couldn't warm up to it. Price wasn't bad, but couldn't bring myself to spend on it at the time.

    I've been looking at them on the Ruger web site myself. I still like the 18" barrel models over the newer 16" barrel ones. Just don't think 16" gives the .223/5.56 enough running room to reach velocity. The Poly stocks, while practical just don't Look as nice as a wooden one. Might get a Poly stock model anyway then find a good Laminate replacement at a later date.

    I would never part with my 188 series Ranch. 1 moa out of a light carbine is hard to beat.

    Ok, so can we get a Short List of the "good, the bad and the ugly" of the Mini-14 World? We know the 180 is out because the factory no longer supports it and there's no real aftermarket for it. So, where do we go from there. I personally don't care for the 1:7 barrel so what series does that leave out of the list? I'd like to use Ruger Factory scope rings, I know the Ranch Rifle has cuts for em', which other rifles have those cuts?
    Just a little Buyer's List of which rifles would be worth getting into and which to avoid would be nice. Thanks. ;)

    thanks to another grand decision by ruger, you can't get the stainless from factory with a wood stock any more. i only shot mine with the poly stock once before swapping the stock out to a wood stock. while a few plastic stocks appeal to me, i'll always find the wood stock preferable.

    midaway usa has stocks and all the hardware. easy problem to fix. you could sell the plastic stock to offset costs, or keep it and have both.

    I've seen Mini wood take-off stocks for $5 several times.

    Thanks for the interest in the SAIGA! But... hanging on to it for either a WASR U/F AK or possibly a Series 181 Mini-14 rifle in a FTF trade.

    Thanks anyway!
