I'm preface this by saying my priority is the safety of my family and myself.

How do most people store their shotgun, in terms of "readyness"/type of ammo...

If someone breaks into the house I know I wont have time to load the magazine barrel one by one..this unfortunately is the safest way to keep it. I like the idea of having a few ready to go in the magazine, none in the chamber and locked....i dont like the idea of having it in this sort of state (even though it's locked) when i'm not home (no kids in the house and im in my 20s).

    What do you guys reccomend?

This topic has been discussed (in great detail) in the shotgun section of the forum.

It has been discussed, but hasn't everything?

My take on it is a pump 12 ga. shotgun stored with ammo in the tube, but none in the chamber.

I like #4 turkey load backed with 00 buck then slug 00 buck etc... Keep the gun out of your kids reach when you aren't around and locked up when you aren't at home. :)

Yeah, it's been discussed, but a lot of times people want a personalized answer. *shrug* What are you gonna do.

I think an excellent place to have a loaded shotgun is above the door frame on the inside of the closet in the master bedroom. If you don't tell anyone, no one will know it's there and it's easy to get too, even in the dark.

I personally prefer my 1911 for home defense, but I also have a 106# German Sheppard that will be making life hell for anyone foolish enough to set foot in his house, so the 1911, really, is going to be for finishing the job.

Almost ready - I still need a few more guns. And a LOT more ammo. Not to mention some of you fine folks to watch my six when we are shooting and scooting around the barren wasteland. ;)

I have a NEF Protector pump loaded with 00 buck. The chamber is clear but the it is open and I instructed the wife that all she has to do is pull it out of the gun cabinet and slide the pump forward. It has an 18" barrel so it makes a pretty good HD shotty.

I recommend having a fully loaded pump with an empty shell in the chamber, so all you have to do to get ready is pump the empty shell out...

You won't HAVE to use the greatest single pistol ever designed - but if you don't, you aren't going on patrol with the rest of the men. :D

    LOL - Like Matt said...

Much appreciated Hunter, I knew I could count on you. And besides, we are to need some serious deer and elk slayers to keep the protein up. :D

Our merry band of societal outcasts will be well armed, well prepared and definitely a force to be reckoned with. You HEAR THAT SKYNET?!?! *shaking fist at no one in particular*

Hey JD, I got your back.

I know this pic looks bad, gun pointed at camera with finger on the trigger. That's why I'm holding the camera, not the wife.

Full magazine, empty chamber, safety on, action locked (Remington 870).

You need to practice being this format into action. Hit the action release and cycle the action to chamber a round. Then all you need to do is disengage the safety, which I wouldn't do until I was ready to fire. With your finger off the trigger, it rests along the safety so you can snap it off as you move to touch the trigger before pressing.

For interior home defense with family members I would suggest bird shot. You are going to cause a bad day for an attacker at standard interior distances, but you aren't going to have to much of an issue with shooting through barriers/walls.

This thread (like all threads) should begin with "proper" spelling. And then there's the topic of "readiness" of your shotgun.

Wow that is a great idea, I'm glad I thought of that lol :p

For my apartment, I'm stuck with a 20 gauge and birdshot =(. Over penetration is something I absolutly can not risk at all whatsoever. However I think I should be allright, after 2 or 3 shots from anything I dont think anybody is gunna see straight enough to cause any damage.

Plus, I'm not shooting to kill. Im shooting to disable and get them sent to jail where they REALLY can suffer.
