What is your preferred handgun (not rifle or shotgun) caliber for primary (not backup) civilian (not LE or military) self defense? This means for a commericially available (not hand loaded) cartridge to be used in a revolver or semi-auto of your choice.

1911 loaded with 230 gr Hydrashocks. Hitting a bad guy center mass with one of those puppies will take the fight right out of them.

I like 9mm myself. But when I get old enough to conceal carry I'll have a .357 on me as well as some autoloader.

I am an avid fan of the .45 ACP.

I also really like the 9x19mm. A nice 9mm Hydra-Shock / Gold Dot / etc... will put a man down quickly. The added firepower of having more rounds available at one time is always a plus to me.

Most people will say "If you need more than 5 rounds, you aren't shooting effectively". I always say that there is not one person out there that can predict what type of defense situation he/she will face. You may face a single, bumbling BG in your home. You may also end up in a full-on firefight with some street thugs packing some serious heat.

I voted 9 X 19 as this is for ALL civilians, across the board. The .45 is clearly superior, but not everyone can handle one. There is nothing wrong with a 9 for SD. Shot placement is the key. A well centered hit with a 9 is better than a periferal hit from a .45.

Hi guys, I'm new here, but have been a guest several times for help and general knowledge. I voted for the 9mm, because like what SGT MILLER stated, God forbid you'd ever be faced with a couple street thugs with a plethora of .32's and .380's, I want a 9mm high capacity. I have a SW9VE, and I'm glad that I have 16 shots at my disposal if something like this ever happened. Shot placement is key, and if you're not an avid shooter, the extra shots aid a normal guy protecting his family/himself.

Why mess around? That's the closest thing I have to .460 rowland at this time, got 6 mags loaded with it.

Personally, I have to go with a 357 mag, sigs can suck it. I've got a 45 ACP and a 9mm but if I had to pick one, I'd go with the 357. A very close 2nd is my 45.

for home defense,a 1911 .45 acp or 10mm is pretty much what i'll add in my nightstand roster along with my G22.

    1911,but i'm a bit trigged by a stainless 10mm 1911....i'd like a razorback,but i think they didn't figured it o.k yet...

in fact,my next purchase if i can find the right model i like...wich is not so easy to pin-point because i'm use to glocks :p lolol.
