I am currently looking into either building/having built/purchasing a precision rifle platform capable of 1000+ yard engagements. I have been using a bolt Mosin-Nagant 91/30 that I have done some work to myself to improve it and it has suited me well out to around 300 yards but beyond that I find it's age and style lacking though the power is more than adequate.

What I am looking for is some general opinions of different calibers and rifle manufacturers. I think .50 is a bit excessive for me, and too costly to do any kind of valid training with though .338 Lapua would be fine and nothing smaller than a 300 WSM as if memory serves me most calibers below a .308 are 800 yards maximum effective range anyway.

The goal of this platform is to engage a 6 inch target at 1000 yards, current budget is 3000. Budget is flexible if the advantages of spending more are notable.

    50bmg ammo price = 338 ammo price

    Some questions,

do you have a 1000 yard range??

did you know shooting a 6 inch target at 1000 yards is about the same as consistantly hitting a .6 inch target at 100 yards or a 1.8 inch at 300. And that is totally not counting for mirage or wind.

Did you know that mirage when looking through a magnified optic at an object 1000 yards away can at times completely obscure a man sized object.

The higher the magnification the worse the mirage effect can get.

1000 yard shooting is more of an art than a science. Being able to hit a ten inch circle consistantly at 1000 yards is considered the gold standard goal for shooters who engage in such things. For that, people practice for years honing their skills at judging wind and mirage and trigger control.
