Why is it that certain members are able post in there and others are not when both are not supporting members?

Just had a huge post typed up on my phone but when I pressed to send it it says I am denied. After that I looked and the guy I was quoting was a senior member just like me.

Actually, it is only because we don't like Linux users. The Linux penguin kept trying to hit on Pengy, our mascot.

:p Sorry, could not resist! Do not know which thread or which user. However, if it started as a thread outside of politics, and was MOVED to politics (As we have done with several), well...........

Were some accounts grandfathered in and allowed to post in the politics section when the new rule was put in place?

ANGST FACTOR 12: You know not with whom you screw.

I've been a hard-core Linux user since version 0.12 (the first publicly released version) and use it daily. Fools mocked me until Linux overtook their precious Solaris *spit* in the data center. Non-techie folks mocked me until they saw I could do so much more than they with their idiot operating systems, Windows and MacOS. (MacOS made a giant leap when it adopted the MACH kernel and let knowledgeable folks muck around under the hood, but their hardware still stinks for the price.)

Anyway, Linux is cool. Don't mess with it or I'll crash your refrigerator, tablet, TV, toaster oven, car, favorite pen, that last six pack you just bought, and your garage door opener (they all run Linux).

Hell I'll take Ubuntu over windows every day. Linux is a headache for a couple days then it's fantastic. Windows is a migraine that never goes away. Mac is for socialists. Android in for people that don't mind being spied on. Lol

What exactly is Linux? I know it is an operating system, but how is it different from windows, mac, ect?

Windows is extremely unsecure. Mac is hyper controlling. Linux is safe, free and highly customizable. Just for starters.

It's different from Windows in the same way that an AR-15 is different than an AK-47. They do the same thing but the accessories available are different, software is the accessory in the computer world.

Linux is open source which means that the code that builds it is available for everyone to see and modify, it's completely transparent unlike Windows which is very much locked down and Microsoft tries to stop anyone from seeing it except their own people. This leads to different schools of thought on security, one saying that if we show everyone the code then everyone can see search for bugs and come up with fixes, the other school of thought is to restrict everyone from seeing the code so they have a more difficult time trying to exploit it(security through obscurity).

I would agree with Mountainman's description but add a little to it.

Mac thinks that their are two ways to do something, their way and the wrong way and they make you do it their way. It's not always a bad thing, it's pretty intuitive and easy to learn.

Windows is less secure but that's partly because it's so popular more people use it therefore more people attack it. It can be customized as well but not always with built in Microsoft tools, but it's so popular you can usually find a guide to what you are trying to do.

Linux is completely customized to do whatever you want it to do. Configured properly and it's incredibly secure, improperly and it can be open to the world, something that Microsoft and Mac don't let happen easily. It's also more efficient because techies like efficiency and some think it's a fun time spending a month rewriting code that works to simply make it work in a slightly faster time or shorter length. I would venture to say that most of the worlds web servers run a form of linux/unix, that speaks to it's efficiency.

when notdku closed the politics section to members only some folks were grandfathered in that were around at the time. thats why you will see some non-sm posting there.

i dont have a list of who the non sm are that can post so all non-sm political postings outside the politics section get removed. i only move the sm ones. this prevents people from just posting whatever political stuff and then letting the mods move it so they get to post there by default.

this is primarily a gun forum that happens to have a politics section for the people who are serious about supporting the community.
