can anyone tell me if i run ss109 .223 thru my ar 15 will it destroy the barrel????????
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skm_tEeUfYw"]This guy[/ame] seems to have no problems.
is it stamped for .223 or 5.56?? if it is stamped for .223 then it will wear faster and the slightly different ammo of the 5.56 will accelerate any normal wear altho it will function the weapon.
if it is stamped 5.56 or 5.56 and .223 no problems.
how accurate the round is depends on the rifling of your particular weapon and the vageries of individual traits of the gun itself.
rule of thumb is if the AR is not marked for 5.56 do not use military ammo and stick with civilian .223. the 5.56 is a little hotter and the chamber is slightly different.
check the AR15 specific board if you need a better explanation than i have.
cool , thank you jon m
that is a perfect explanation, thank you for your help...it says 5.56 on the side.
As far as I know, there are no commercial offerings of SS109.
So if you've got green tipped in 223 casings, I'd not shoot them.
As far as I'm concerned, the only green tip worth having is Lake City.
Why on Earth would SS-109/M855 ammo ruin your barrel. Have you gotten some completely screwed up info from some Chairborne Ranger?
Please refer to explanations of the difference between .223 and 5.56 X 45. To a purist, they are NOT the same chambering just as .308 Win and 7.62 X 51 are NOT the same chambering.
We do not want to sound like stuck up a$$ holes but the difference can be critical in some firearms. Most of us want to be truly understood in our posts (and daily speech) so we are precise in our word choices. We do not use "clip" and "magazine" interchangeably. An "automatic" is a machine gun. A "semi-automatic" is a type of pistol/rifle/shotgun available to the general public w/few restrictions, etc.
to clarify my post you would have to run 25k to 50k rounds through a weapon before noticing any sort of real barrel wear. worrying about that sort of thing under normal civilian usage is like worrying about getting hit in the head with a piece of the moon.
barrels for AR's are cheap as dirt for even a really good one and easy to replace. i wouldnt worry about it either way.
not sure why you would want to use crappy military ammo in a good AR anyway. most of that stuff is terrible for accuracy but great for hearing the gun go bang. its made by the lowest bidder with the cheapest materials mainly for wartime usage and training.
invest in some reloading gear and you can make whatever kind of round you want for an AR or any other wepaon you own at cheaper than surplus rates.

I remember reading on here where someone was talking about shooting ss109's armor piercing rounds thru the ar 15 and they can f#ck up the barrel.. I only have owned my ar for about 6 months and i would like to know the facts so i buy the right ammo... i have owned handguns and rifles for about 15 years but the ar is new and i don't want to mess it up.. who ever can help thanks
dont worry about it. even if you get some your not gonna mess up your rifle shooting a few through it. since yours is marked for 5.56 it is designed to fire them and civilian rounds.
Cane, not sure I understand the question?
That ammo is Lake City 5.56.
thats all i was wanting to know.... i have like 150 rounds and wanted to shoot it all up so i can buy some more... any one have suggestions for 5.56 ammo that is good for the rifle and its ok if it is pricey i jus want good ****...
You said, "So if you've got green tipped in 223 casings, I'd not shoot them."
To which I responded, "Why not??"
See # 8 above.
