hi - new guy here - i have had the rifle below for nearly 40 years. i have recently aquired a magazine for it - at least it fits. i was led to believe it is a savage 23aa - it is stamped

    -EXPERT-

    whitte hdwe co.

    st. louis, mo

as i said, i thought it was a savage 23aa & the clip fits - but the firing pin looks different - and that's where i'm having my problem.

the firing pin does not retract far enough to allow the round to slide all the way up through the ejector(s) and feed properly into the breech - it comes in at too high of an angle. i took the bolt apart, completely cleaned, buffed, shined & lubed everything thinking that might help - but no go. any ideas from the experts? pics below.

I believe it is a Savage. I recently purchased a Springfielsd Stevens Model 86 my bolt looks the same, If you pull the firing pin knob out and turn it to the right the safety is on!
Savage bought out Stevens in about 1925, They made firearms under different name, Hence the name White Hardware Co. If I can help you in any shape manner or form call 978-424-7024 Cliff

thanks cliff - i'm sure it's a savage - and i THOUGHT it was a 23aa - but the firing pin looks different on the 23aa parts list. that's what i'm having a problem with (see above). it looks similar to the model 86 (and some others) but i haven't been able to find the correct firing pin.

I believe the action and barrel were one-piece on the 23's.
Savage made a mess of different 22's.

a mess is right! ok - it's a model 56 --- identical --- MAN there are a lot of guns CLOSE --- but the 56 is an exact visual match. the firing pin matches pretty close - but not exactly - but it looks like mine is REALLY worn. unless this is yet a different pin - what do you think?

my problem is the firing pin is not pulling back far enough for the round to seat in the ejector to load into the breech right & i'm wondering if the firing pin is the issue - or if it might be something else?

The proportions are obviously not the same but Gun Parts' looks to be an aftermarket and may just work but not be to spec.

Yours could easily be a home-made replacement.

You are missing the firing pin spring. It retracts the spring to allow the round to seat properly. Here is a link for you. http://www.gun-parts.com/savagerifle/. Look under OBSOLETE 22 Rifle Parts.

bumping this thread to ask another question.

does ANYBODY know how to get in touch with this guy:

    http://www.gun-parts.com/savagerifle/

i ordered a pin & spring back in march & have heard nothing.

the website is straight out of 1989 - but i managed to navigate, place my order & pay for it. then ... nothing.

there is no phone number - only a fax.

    any ideas?

Did he charge your card? Have there been any odd charges? All you can do is go back to your card provider is there have been charges and you better do it quick because there is a time limit.
