i was recently given a 22 rifle by a good friend for helping him move. my uncle is an investigator for the local police department and i showed it to him. it has no markings on it at all. appears to have been painted in my opinion but i believe its older than 1968. the guy who gave it to me is elderly but served in law enforcment for a long time . please help and thanks in advance! sorry for [picture quality.

Looks like a Marlin 81, or possibly the JC Higgins version.

I have a JC Higgins that is similar , except that it has the detachable box magazine instead of the tube feed. It was my first gun, and it is a great shooter.

If it is a J.C.Higgins 103.229 it will say so on the barrel just about the end of the forearm !...............You said painted it may be covered up.
