Wow, the new on my gun isn't even cold yet and the buzzards are already circling. I think for now it will have to be an estranged relationship. But an A+ for the reconciliation attempt, Jim.
Took it out the other day and put a few rounds through her. All I had on hand was some Rem. .38spl. 130gr. MC. Out of that big ol' N frame it was like a loud .22.
Looks like they have some fine grips.
Thanks for the post! I have a 27-2 5" that they would look good on. Do you happen to know off hand, who makes a good leather regular duty style holster for the 27 5" ?
Those look like they really fill the hand. Ya know, I never could understand why Smith put those small grips on an N frame or a round butt for that matter.
I like those nice S&W wood grips that you have on yours CajunBass, but mine came with the skinny little wood grips like the ones HKSlinger's had in the original post. I wonder what determined whether you got the ones like yours or the little ones. Putting the little ones on a N-Frame .357 Mag. was just wrong!
Agreed. I think, and I'm just reaching here, that maybe the older guns had the smaller grips. I think the "target" grips came latter. Now, going by the serial number, mine was made in the mid 70s and sure isn't older,as 28s go. Maybe before me, the person or persons before that, put on older grips to make it appear older or just had smaller hands. I know the numbers in side the grips do not match the guns numbers.
I bought my 28-2 new in mid-'81 so it must ahve been made sometime around then, yet it also came with the skinny grips. It would have been much nicer if it had the larger target grips. I like my rubber grips because they are very functional, but the wood target grips look elegant.
I think the Magna grips (the "skinny" ones) were the standard grips and the target grips were an extra cost option. I like them both, but at one time I didn't like the Magna's either. I thought they looked "quaint and old fashioned." Now I like them because they DO look "quaint and old fashioned."
Magna's on a couple of Model 10's.
Those are "K" frames of course. The Magna's on the "N" are nicer (more hand filling). A Tyler's T grip is all you need to make Magna's feel great.
You're right CajunBass they look just right on the Model 10's and likewise on the smaller snub-nose 38's like HKslinger says, but they were just very odd looking when stuck on a large N-frame S&W. I went to the gun shop and got the pachmayr grips within a week or so of getting my 28.
I always liked looking at the old photos of chopper pilots, like from Vietnam, and seeing what kind of pistol they are wearing, usually in some kind of shoulder rig. You ever talk to the old timers about there guns of choice? I'm guessing your given some latitude.

Well unfortunately I AM one of the old timers from the Vietnam era. You were given the choice between a S&W Model 10 M & P in .38 Special or a Colt Model 1911 in .45 ACP. I went with the .45 because I could carry 10 loaded magazines in pouches on my ammo belt with another one in the gun. That made more sense to me than six .38's with a few extra rounds in a pocket somewhere.
Oh, and there was also a CAR-15 with a bandoleer of magazines that flew everywhere with me too.
There were a few .357's Mag. S&W Combat Masterpieces around and a few Browning 9mm's, but pistols were more for the comfort and peace of mind of person carrying them. They don't really have much place on the modern battlefield. If you are close enough to the enemy for a pistol to do any good, you are in a bad place.
Your right, pistols are the last resort. And I meant "old timers" with the utmost respect. Thanks for your service. Hey, I almost forgot, I did a paint job on my front sight also. Man,that bright red is really easy to pick up in a sight picture. A lot easier than go through check out with whore red nail enamel .
