The size\shape of the metplat has more to do with penetration than anything, excepting momentum. Whitworth proved this befor the American Civil War. Veral Smith is an expert on this kind of thing. A well designed .357 bullet, of about 200 grains will penetrte pretty deep in about anything. the heavier,ei 270-300+ 44 bullet with a flat metplat will amaze you as to penetration. Both will leave a surprisingly wide wound channel, or permanent cavity, comparedto a hp r round nose, or even a keith style bullet.
